Why used? You can get a factory refurbished for that.

I went from a D7000 to a D750 and could not be happier.

I knew it would mean more lens purchases as I had just one FX lens at the time. But to me it made sense as I intend to keep in the full frame Nikon world. And jumping into the D750 was very easy. Some buttons and functions are moved, but overall a very familiar feel and great high ISO performance.

Right now used, low-click D750s are cheaper than D500s

My D500 went to Alaska to shoot Northern Lights. It has also been exposed to spray in the waterfalls. Just kept firing like a champ even in -15 with wind blowing a gale. Several nights and it never coughed. Love that camera for wildlife as well but looks like your don't chase things that move so much. I had the D7100 and love the menu of this camera much better. Never exposed the D7100 to extremes before I sold it so can't comment on that. Can't go wrong with the D500!

I have two D7000's, one D500, and one D750. The D500 is probably the best crop sensor camera made. It would be the best camera to survive the hard treatment you give cameras. It has a magnesium construction that is very strong and the camera has extensive weather sealing.

Another great feature on the D500 is the joystick on the back. It's the camera I take to model photo shoots. The joystick allows me to move focus points quickly. I can always keep a focus point on the model's face. I like that Nikon has found a great place for the ISO button. It's now directly behind the shutter button. There are also two function buttons - Fn1, and Fn2.

Here's a tip if you get a D500. The video record button, behind and to the left of the shutter button, can be reprogrammed to execute Mode. Mode is the group of four buttons on the top left but it's much more convenient to have it next to the shutter button.

Thanks for the hands on input! Having a quicker way to change ISO will be nice.

I didn't think about a refurbished model. That sound like a good match since they are about the same price as used. Thanks for the links!

Of my 14 DSLR bodies two are Nikon, a D7200 and a D500. If you don't need the up to 10 frames per second of the D500 then seriously consider the D7200. Based on what you said you enjoy photographing, the D7200 is probably the better choice. It's weather sealed, has higher resolution, plenty of features and it's the logical progression of what you already have, plus a new D7200 body costs less than a used D500.

I got my D7000 in 2013 so I realize just about every current Nikon model will have a upgraded sensor and processor. For me, the D7200 isn't enough of an upgrade over the system I have. Thanks for chiming in!

I've had my D7000 for 6 years so I wanted to get something closer to the latest version.

I see that now.

When I looked into the high ISO performance, the D500 looked better. I think it has to do with the EXPEED 5 vs EXPEED 4. I didn't see a reason to move to FX.

I'm trying to decide what camera I should get next. I currently have a D7000 with 50,000 clicks. I have one super old 105mm 2.8 ALs macro lens and the rest are DX. My usual lens is a 17-55 2.8, but I also use the 8mm Rokinon 2.8 for astro stuff. I've never used the pop up flash and I have 3 off camera flashes.
Most of my shooting fits into three areas:
Macro. I use the 105 lens, a 68mm set of automatic extension tubes and a off camera flash
Waterfalls. I usually shoot them during a hike between 5-12 miles. I find I like the close in shots the most so I'm usually in a little spray.
Star trails/Milkyway. High ISO and interval timer are key.
My equipment lives a hard life. I did buy the D7000 body new, but every lens has been used. The reason I'm looking into a replacement is the toggle on the back of my D7000 has not been working well when I'm in sub-freezing temperatures. It takes a few tries now to get the timer to start for my star trail shots.

What I'm leaning towards is a used D500. There are two reasons. First, it is sealed a bit better and second, it has the latest Expeed processor. I've seen a few used ones around $1400 from Adorama.

I too started eiththe D7000, still have it and use it but upgraded to the D500 , my reason ing was for the bettersensor and processor, the low light improvemet and focus system.

I am very pleased with it it meets all my requirements, hasn't made me a better photographer but I have many more keepers
In short you will be very happy with the D500, I haven't yet tried it for astrophotography but in the plans, for wildlife it is great. Buy it and enjoy

What about a D7500? Everything a D500 offers except (OMG) a 2nd card slot! At 1/2 half the price plus there are deals everywhere.
Same weather sealing and a carbon fiber monocoque body. Did I mention the frame rate and the buffer? I got one and I love it.

The D7500 won't work as smoothly with my main macro lens - 105 mm AL-s. Plus the D500 has a tougher build which might help it last longer.

Thanks for all the input. I picked up a new D750. I'm super happy with the resulting images!
