My buddy & I are planning a photo tour starting in New England & heading SoWest to the Cactus Forrest near Tucson, then heading Northerly to Sedona, Grand Canyon, Grand Staircase-Escalante, Mesa Verde, Badlands in SD, Grand Tetons, Yellow Stone, Glacier NP, up the Rockies into Canada for Jasper & Bannf NPs before turning Easterly back across Canada to New England.

Looking for suggested sights along those routes that might include great Rt 66 sights, old trains, old cars or motorcycles, wildlife or other photo opportunities along the way.

The Maine cost is a photographer's heaven. Scores of little harbor towns, and unlimited woodlands hosting all manner of wild animals.

Massachusetts has many old cities and towns where the old mill buildings still stand. Cape Cod has the sea, the dbeaches, the harbors, and the dunes.

All states have tourism info online which can help you, and many have contacts through which you can get specific answers to your questions.

Have a great time! >Alan

I recommend the Durango-Silverton ride, but take the tour that comes back by coach. The coach travels a different path back to Durango and the scenery is awesome.

Geannie & Retired cpo ... thank you ... appreciate the follow-up on Antelope.

David in Dallas ... amazing shots. I went to your flicker account & think it will take me days just to peruse all those photos. Wow!!!! Thank you for those. And the GPS is interesting. I will consider that. I'm lucky in that all my camera bodies have GPS in them (Canon 5dIV, 6d & 7dII) which will be very useful on a trip like this.

914Cathy57 ... 1st of all, welcome to UHH & thanks for the comment on Antelope ... amazing place.

PRodacy ... you're right about spending a summer in any one of these states. We're trying to squeeze a lot into a month & a half ... really appreciate the referral to the railroad site & ride. That sounds like a "to do". And the drives ... those are precisely what we're looking for. And thank you for your kind offer to meet ... if for no other reason, maybe get together to break bread. I'll try sending a private message with more precise trip info. I will say, you're demonstrating one of the things I appreciate about UHH. While there are a few cranks on the site, most folks seem to be really decent & helpful. Thank you for that.

eO26441-yahoo.com ... welcome to UHH as well & thanks for the Canyon de Chelly referral. I didn't know that site & just did a quick look up of it. Looks very interesting & it's doesn't appear to be that far out of the way from where we'll be. Definitely will look into that. Thank you.

If you’re near Mesa Verde, try going to Durango, Colorado and The Durango and Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad. They have a very nice ride to Silverton and the scenery is quite nice in Silverton.

aellman ... thanks for the referrals. Although he might deny it, I consider my buddy one of "the authorities" on the Maine coastline & you're right, there are some awesome places to shoot. I've captured your suggestions for follow-up during some shorter trips from here at home. Thank you for that.

David in Dallas & Jimsr44 ... thank you both for the Durango - Silver & the coach suggestions. Those sound like definite "to do's". As Retired CPO & others have said earlier, this is squeezing a lot into a month & a half.

DON'T miss Bryce Canyon NP. You'll always regret it if you do.

Sounds like a wonderful, ambitious trip! I hope you schedule in extra time to account for unplanned side trips and stops. This is an adventure to savor and enjoy!

Have fun!

Page Arizona, just north of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to see the upper and lower Antelope Canyon. It is a must. Upper Canyon you may use a tripod ( recommendet) lower Canyon no tripod or backpack.

Tetons, Glacier and Yellowstone May be slow to open. This is a cold snowy winter. I would guess late April. Call the Rangers, don’t trust my guess.

I like heading up through Lamar Valley and out the northeast of Yellowstone and over Bearclaw pass.
I enjoy the steam coming off of the hot pots around the boardwalk at Old Faihful and shooting back into the sun.
Cascade Falls in Teton NP with the overlook hike and early mornings around Teton Lodge.
Sunrise coming from behind up Yellowstone Grand Canyon at Painters Point
Little Big Horn Cemetery and walks along the Battlefield— big skies
Sunsets over Yellowstone Lake
The Canadian side of the peace park in Watertown
Kayak or Canoe string Lake and Portage over to Leigh Lake. Head over to the sandy east shore for a great view of Mount Moran and the Tetons. A very nice place for a picnic. Have bear spray.
Utah has plenty of ghost towns from the pioneer settlers. Also plenty of old railroad towns along the old California trail. It is one mountain range/valley west of I-15 starting at Delta (coming from Salt Lake). Look on the internet for Ghost Towns.
Bryce particularly, but also Zions, are wonderful in snow.
If you head to Jackson through Star Valley, pull off the main road and you’ll see old farm equipment and a few real ranches, like west past Freedom up towards Tin Cup pass.

Have fun. Sounds fantastic.

I forgot the best piece of advice that I can give. When at Mesa Verde, contact the Ute reservation and ask for a private tour of their anasazi ruins. You pay a guide for half a day. It was one of the funnest and most interesting tours that have ever been on. My kids loved it too. This is not the sterilized, PC NP ranger tour.

williejoha ... thanks for the clarification on Upper vs. Lower Antelope Canyon. Appreciate it.

Dossile ... thanks for some great suggestions ... & some definite "to do's". Great idea about calling the Ute reservation. Hired a guide in Monument Valley last year & it was a fantastic experience.

And a general, overall thanks to UHH for some wonderful suggestions & good wishes. Much appreciated. You've given us a lot of homework!!!!

Have you considered Arches National Park and across the highway, Canyonlands National Park. Both are extremely photographic, especially Arches.
