Camera Servicing

I have a Canon 60D which is used frequently. This camera is now about 12-15 years old. It seems to work fine, has no obvious defects (apart from the rubber grip coming off) so my question is: Is it worth getting the camera serviced after this length of time or rather, wait until it obviously does need something done. I guess in many ways its a personal thing like servicing a vehicle but what are the recommendations, if any, with respect to this.

Many Thanks

Paul

Do you mean actually a D60, a 6MP camera released by Canon in Feb 2002? That would be a much different camera than the 60D, 18MP camera released in August 2010. If you meant the camera from 2002ish, the repair options are probably limited, if at all, due to no parts available for that model. At almost 9-years of age, the newer 60D will shortly be moved to non-support by Canon as well.

Putting more money into either of these bodies is not money well spent. Use them happily and regularly until they develop an actual problem. When that day arrives, move onto a new camera given the limited options for a repair. Used copies of the same model are another option, where buying another is likely to be cheaper than the quoted amount for a repair.

How much are you willing to spend to have a 12 year old camera? Keep in mind that the D60 can be had for less than $10 online. The 60D (which is not 12-15 years old) sells closer to $300.00 used.

Keep using it. It's not worth to send in for service. The tech should make around $30 an hour if not more. Adding the overhead most company would value his time around $100 or $120 an hour. How long you guess it would take him to do the CLA?

I picked up a 60d from mpb.com for $234. 15K clicks. Looks brand new.
