You want me to feel sorry for you? In Michigan, my car registration used to be $68 a year. We got a new Republican governor, and BOOM: $126 each year. Now we have a Democrat as governor. Will the fees go down? Not a chance.

When my son bought his new Fit, he paid $60 to transfer registration from the old car to the new one, and that was for just three months. Now the new registration is due, and that's costing $42 for two years, and they add a $10 "Usage Fee" onto that, for a total of $52. What's a "Usage Fee"? Is that a fee for using the license plates? And how is that different from the "Registration Fee"? I wonder what it would have cost to get a new registration with the new car. As it is, it's costing him $112 for two years. All the money we give to the state is a tax, so they should call it a tax.

It's the same with telephone bills, electric bills, cable bills, and many others. There are so many fees and taxes added that the amount they advertise is deceptive. When you buy a ticket for just about anything these days, there is a fee added to it. When I was working, I should have collected a "Showing Up" fee from my employer.

On the plus side, NY doesn't add property tax to the cost of registration. When I registered my motorcycle in NH, it cost about $150 for one year.

Jerry, you have absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes to car taxes. NOTHING. Although I will sympathize with you about all the other taxes. I'm surprised that NY has such cheap auto taxes. I have a 13 year old Honda that just cost me $136 to register - FOR JUST ONE YEAR. It will be the same next year, with one exception, I will also have to get it's emissions tested at my expense that will cost me at least another $50. That is what all normal cars over 10 years old cost Californians every year now. That will go up at the whim of the Governor as Jerry Brown, our outgoing Governor just prooved when he raised that tax by 30% last year.

So, that said, if you have a car that is less that 10 years old, you pay more, MUCH more. The first year of registration on a new car in California will cost between $600 and $800. That's just the registration of the car. The sales tax is somewhere between 8.75% and 9.5% depending what city or county you buy the car in. That's just automobiles. A pickup truck will cost more because all trucks, no matter the size, are considered to be Commercial vehicles and the cost of a Commercial vehicle license will be another $150 or more on top of the registration fee. Over the course of the next 10 years, the fees go down by about 10% a year until it's 10 years old and then you pay that same base fee I mentioned above.

There is an alleged Washington team conducting research on a device to be worn and used by all people in the country that will enable measurement of lung inspiration rate and tidal volume. This device will enable a Federal “air usage rate fee.”

Some states have personal property taxes instead of income taxes. Connecticut is one. I lived there for three years and escaped the tax on my car for the year I moved to NY.

In NY it makes more sense to transfer registration from old car to new than surrendering old plates and starting from scratch with the new car.

The extra $32 really is a good idea as the newer electric cars, by virtue of not using gas, avoid paying taxes for road maintenance. BTW, the gas taxes likely go to other Dept of Transportation projects besides road maintenance.

Really? Tax everyone even if the use gas? Me thinks I see why they get away with it.

By any other name it is still a tax. Aint it great. The only difference between the government and the mob is, the mob isn't always changing the rules. Pay up or else.

Sure, why not. They can tax the other end and you will get so much for a poop allowance or get charged for the overage. Great idea.

Jerry, Consumer Reports is asking for stories just like this from its subscribers.
Think about the fees added to the base price of an event ticket with Ticketmaster, et al, or extra fees car dealers charge.
It’s all BS. Just a way to squeeze more money from us.
There was a personal property tax on vehicles when I lived in Connecticut.
Must be a New England thing.

Very true. It's been a thorn in my side for years -- the fact that advertised event ticket prices are fictitious. They cannot be purchased anywhere for that price. Therefore, they should NOT be allowed to advertise those ticket prices!
