I recently purchased a lens hood for my 50mm. I have the lens on my camera and want to know if will hurt anything if I leave the lens hood on in the camera bag?

I leave mine on and nothing bad has happened.
Yes. You will explode from spontaneous combustion.

Not of it fits. BTW, most his will turn around for putting in the bag.

That’s what I’ve been doing for over 40 years.
One possible exception is on my 50 I have s rubber hood which collapses so no need to reverse.

Hoods on lenses just take up a lot of usable space.

Not if you cap the lens or hood. But it will take space ....

Takes up more storage room but protects the lens. I've sprinkled lens caps liberally but not hoods. Carrying and using with hood on IMO is safest for the front element.

Reverse it before putting in the bag and there is no wasted space being taken up
As long as it's placed safely inside the bag, it should be fine. You don't want any stress placed on it by other items in the bag.

If it's a bayonet mount hood, it should be reversible on the lens to save space in your camera bag.
If the lens happens to be a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, I highly recommend doing that. The focus mechanism of that particular lens is widely known to be rather fragile and might be damaged by a hard bump on the focus ring. The lens hood, when reversed, does a pretty good job protecting the focus ring from bumps. (Also set the lens to infinity for storage, to fully retract the front barrel and protect it, too. This also shortens the lens as much as possible, saving a little space.)
Thanks Don, I appreciate the reassurance.

I leave my hood on my 24-105mm L in the bag in shooting position mounted on the camera.
Many years now with no Ill effects.
