Back in the day I often backpacked with a Nikon F3 and a Pentax 645 plus lenses and tripod. I'm slowly digitizing my slides and negatives and falling in love again with the images from the 645.. I've got some great lenses, all manual, and thinking about getting a digital Pentax body and perhaps some digital lenses eventually while I'm still young enough to carry the weight. I mostly shoot landscapes. Is anyone using a digital 645 with manual lenses and what do you think?

Back in the day, I shot with the Mamiya 645. I too, love the images from "medium format." Now, I shoot with a Bronica GS-1 (6x7cm format) using 120 film...which is scanned into digital format. The cost of digital backs on medium format cameras is still prohibitive to me.

But isn't part of the lure the richness in the transparencies? Are you sure that you can replicate that with digital?

You might wish to consider the Fuji medium format. I held and and took a few shots at a couple of big camera stores in Japan with their latest R model. It is pounds lighter than the Hass. Or Pentax, and is very competively priced. I am thinking of selling off a couple dozen of my cameras and going back to medium.

I still take an array of cameras. I'm also planning on getting a Pentax medium format camera. Most of my outings involve 4x5. One of my newest projects is to adapt some lenses from one 4x5 to another to eliminate the need to swap lensboards. I'm also going to adapt the back to enable me to mount a digital camera to the 4x5. My usual assortment of cameras for photo trips is an FX Digital, 2-35mm cameras, a medium format film camera, and the 4x5, which gets the most use.

I do work out in order to maintain the physical strength and endurance needed to carry equipment.

I'm hoping. Getting reasonably good results with good scanner but think digital direct from camera will be better.

A brand new Pentax Z runs you about 5 grand, so a used one should be had for pretty cheap! I hope you get what you're looking for, best of luck and good shooting!

I have the 645 Z and 2 of my five lenses are manual focus oldies. Also realize that there are film era af push/pull lenses available for it at quite reasonable prices. The current af lenses have built in stabilization but are dreadfully expensive. The image quality of this camera regardless of the lens one uses is outstanding. I found the best selection and prices come from Japanese stores.

I used a Pentax 645 with manual lenses and the quality of the images was awesome. Great for big enlargements.

I have used Rollei, Hasselblad. Yashica 120, Mamiya 120, Mamiya 645, and Pentax 645 film cameras. I love them all. I also own a 645Z, with both manual and auto lenses. Can’t say enough good things about this camera or Pentax lenses.

Just remember the med format digital files are quite large. Computers should be able to handle them, or you'll be waiting allot

I have and use Pentax 645 film camera. The 645 Z is a dream camera ! - if you do not mind the flopping mirror. The 645D is much cheaper but lacks some current desirable technologies.

I don't know much about med format digital cameras and looked up the Pentax 645Z. What is the sensor size? I note that it lists 51.7mp. Now the Nikon 850 has some 45mp on a FF sensor. How large an enlargement would be necessary to differentiate the two when viewing the same scene at the same perspective? I ask because I have compared a 24mp crop sensor to a 16mp FF and was surprised at how close these were as viewed on a 27" monitor.

S … the RETAIL price on the Pentax 645Z is $7995 … near enough eight grand. And, you still need glass.
