I am debating whether to take my high end camera gear to Mexico or just take an inexpensive point and shoot camera. I'll be staying at a resort but plan on trips to nearby ruins for photo ops. Some blogs say carrying high end equipment outside of the resort is a risk. I would really appreciate reading about your experiences while sightseeing near Cancun.
Unfortunately Mexico is no longer a destination for me. Many resort area's are walled (wow, there is that word WALL again, wonder where that came from) to protect the tourists.
I make it a general rule to travel just with my pocket Sony point and shoots, HX90V and RX100M2.

Never mind. It is an obvious and cheap joke.
Cheap? Nothing cheap about it.
It all depends where you go. My wife and I had a choice of a free one-week trip to Mexico or Hawaii. You can guess which one we chose.
Get a strap for your Camera and bag with cables in them/ B&H has the in stock, about $25.00
That is the value of insurance (for you and the camera).

My wife and I are just south of Cancun right now for 2 weeks, have our own car, drove to Chichen Itza and another small ruin, visited cenotes, spent the night there and drove back to our resort the next day. I have the Nikon D850, several lenses, and a tripod. You just have to use common sense like don't walk around Cancun late at night. Keep your gear locked in a suit case or room safe when you don't need it. I would take the same precautions anywhere in the world. If you are staying a a big resort, no real concerns.

I forgot to mention...don't miss the Cirque du Soleil show at the Vidanta Resort. You can take photos, no flash.

Excellent response. I go to a resort south of Cancun twice a year for the past ten years. Follow the advice above. Couldn’t get this shot without decent gear.

Exactly! I got a similar shot this morning at sunrise. Great photo!
I have spent much time in the Yucatan, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. Always carry lots of camera gear including FF cameras and 500 mm lenses (not inconspicuous gear) and have never had any problems. Yes, we do use common sense. Theft certainly happens anywhere so you need to be aware but I do not feel any more threatened in southern Mexico than I would in walking around with camera gear in New Orleans or Chicago or Los Angeles.
If you are going to spend the money to go to these places, why not carry gear that you can make memorable pictures with. I understand you can take good pictures with pocket cameras and cell phones, but not as easily or consistently as you can with your more sophisticated gear.

It will still be cheaper than what we pay to support illegals.
