Sony A6000 auto focus problem

My camera has stopped focusing automatically. I almost always shoot in manual. When in Manual mode, I hit the function button and get the settings screen, the "M" for manual is not highlighted. When I move the control to that box and hit "enter", I get the message that "this function is currently disabled". I've tried all the focus settings and that doesn't help (it will focus in manual though).

I've tried turning the power off and then on again but that doesn't help. I did remove the battery once and got the automatic focus to work but not consistently. The Manual box in the function options still did not work when removing the battery. Battery power is not the problem. The situation is the same with the 18-55 lens and the 18-200 OSS lens.

If I put it in MR mode, the drive mode box in the function button screen will highlight the letters MR and I can change the 3 saved settings BUT the auto focus still will not work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry but I don't know how to do that or how could have I done it accidentally?

Test the highly automatic "Green mode".
This overrides nearly ALL user settings
you may have accidentally made. If you
have normal AF function in green mode,
it's 95% sure the camera is not in need
of repair. IOW, a mysterious user error.

Even if you have NOT set back button
AF you still may have disabled "AF with
shutter" cuz that is a separate choice.
Strange, but true :-(

It's counterintuitive but assigning AF to
a back button does NOT simultaneously
cancel "AF with shutter". It seems like
it should, logic-wise, cuz if the "AF with
shutter" remains active, then even tho
the user focuses by BBAF, pressing the
shutter button, to make the exposure,
will then update the focus, defeating
the very purpose of BBAF. WTF ?

All cameras I've used, several brands,
have this seemingly insane separation
of functions ... which suggests that it's
for good reason. But I cannot imagine
WHAT reason !

Anywho, find the "AF with shutter" and
see if it's set to "disable" or to "off". If
you want AF at the shutter button, set
it to "on" or "enable".

That alone will not stop the AF from being
triggered by the shutter button. AF would
keep on keepin on anyway.

Such things do occur while setting
a feature in the menus, if you click
accidentally on the next item rather
than the intended item. Happens all
too easily, especially when you do it
in a hurry. Happens to me now and
then but at least I know the system
well enuf that I can hunt down the
mistake. And even so, it could take
me a while figger it out. I can very
well understand the frustration of a
user who hasn't yet got the menus
down cold :-(

Try taking the camera back to its default, by going to Menu, and then far right tab, then page 6 - Setting Reset - then Camera settings Reset. This will take the camera to its default settings, so anything you have set up on it before will have to be set up again.

I've checked all the menu settings and changed what I thought may have caused this and then went back to the function button and "Manual" is still listed as "disabled". I've reset everything by choosing that options in the last Menu screen (toolbox) and that didn't work. I've reviewed all settings to look for an accidental selection.

I apologize but I never saw a "green" mode selection in any menu and still don't know if a back button focus was enabled.

I believe he was referring to the dial on the top of the camera.

Jerry,
Thanks for the hint. And yes the auto-focus works in "green" mode. In fact it's working in Manual now too.

Maybe resetting all settings helped. The M box on the function button box is still listed as "currently disabled" but maybe I don't care if I get what I want.

I'm getting Gary Friedland's book today!

And thanks to all UHH members (from around the globe) for taking the time to help me. I'm getting great shots of sunsets, ultralight seaplanes and palm trees in Florida while enjoying the high 70's temperatures.

EXCELLENT SUGGESTION. This is the 1st thing to try to solve any menu related problem with a Sony.

Most cameras (not brand specific) have several "reset" options (full, partial, custom reset, etc.), those should always be engaged prior to any panic.

There is an option in the Menu, rightmost folder, where you can reset to factory settings. Then your job.
