I received an email last night just after midnight Eastern Time announcing the new NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens for the Z Series cameras. It appears to be a pretty interesting lens, although there appear to be several design features separating it from the 24-70 f2.8 Gold Ring lens and placing it possibly below that lens. Although it isn't possible to tell for sure from the material available, it does not appear to be an Internal Zoom design (or even an "almost" Internal Zoom design, like the F-mount 24-70). The posted selling price is $2299.95, which is in the same ballpark as the F-mount VR lens, even though there are no VR components in the lens. So this is quite a premium over the comparable non-VR F-mount equivalent at $1699.95. It is supplied with a cloth bag rather than the more substantial CL-M3 case that comes with the earlier lens.

In the comparison with the f2.8 D/G/E lens, there is a clear size advantage. Filter diameter is 82mm vs. 77 mm. Weight is 24.8 grams.

I'll be interested to hear from some of you with Z6s and Z7s who end up with one of these lenses.

I rented the Z6 for two weeks recently with the 24-70mm f/4 S and 50mm f/1.8 S. They have stellar image quality. I'll bet that the new 24-70mm f/2.8 S at least matches the image quality of the F-mount 24-70mm f/2.8. I'll be interested in seeing test reviews.

Since the Z6 and Z7 have IBIS, there's no need for VR in the new S lenses.

That is a high price. Test reviews should reveal if it's worth that much. I would probably rent again.

Haven't found a drawing yet. But diameter of the Z lens is larger...89mm vs. 83mm, and there are 17 elements in 15 groups vs. 15 elements in 11 groups for the G lens. Weight of the G lens is 31.7 ounces, which is 7 ounces more, probably due to more metal in the construction.

Swap "require" for "allow". Depending on
intended usage, a bigger mount closer to
the sensor can both allow larger elements
for extreme spec's and also allow smaller
elements for compactness.

You may have to wait. NPS is offering first dips, then they will be released on a first come, put you on a waiting list basis. I believe VR is in the body of the Z's? So no need for lens VR right?
If I get a Z this would not be the lens I would mount. Why buy a smaller lighter camera and put that amount of glass on it unless your a professional (and this lens is really designed for them) get their other lighter zoom, which, is JUST AS SHARP.

Yes, understand about the IBIS. My observation was strictly about the price. Also...just looking at the photographs and reading what information is available, it is not clear that this lens is really designed and built as what we have come to consider a "professional" grade lens. Hence my question.

I am not yet personally anywhere close to making the decision to switch or expand to the Z Series, but I'm gathering data for the future.

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, the larger mount and closer back focus will allow a design more conducive to higher image quality. I have seen the Imatest numbers for the other S lenses and they are the highest for any lens I have seen ! - and this newest lens should be no different - the sad part is , no one except me seems to be picking up on this - I would think that Nikon itself and all it's gurus would be heavily promoting this !!

I agree with you about the new Z6/Z7 and the lenses. I rented the Z6 along with the 24-70mm f/4 S and 50mm f/1.8 S lenses for two weeks. The image quality is stellar. It's as good or better than any camera I've ever used. I did a lot of photos with the Z6 and my D500. I had the 24-70mm f/4 S lens on the Z6 and a Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 lens on my D500. I made diptychs with them in Photoshop.
