The author states the camera can focus down to 1 inch at full zoom. I have not been able to duplicate this, with .93 Meter being the closest. Has anyone been able to do this with the stated camera? If so, please tell how.

1" at 24mm, yes. 1" at full (600mm) zoom, no!

ZOOMED OUT

"To decrease the focal length of a zoom lens in order to obtain a reduced magnification of the image, or a wider-angle view."

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/zoom_out

Apparently the author never said "Full Zoom" as the OP stated. Words matter!

OK, Bill, the author didn't say "full zoom" (two words), but how would you interpret this "this lens can focus closer than 1" from the front element when zoomed out all the way". When zoomed out all the way" (five words).

That's why I gave you the definition of Zoomed Out. It doesn't mean make the lens longer, it means wider field of view. You zoom in on something to make it look bigger. Zooming out makes the subject look smaller ... as happens when you choose a shorter focal length.

Mr. Friedman was correct.

But then what is the big deal about it. Thats nothing unique or special that I know of. I have an eight year old Fuji that will do it. Fuji's HS10 and HS50EXR , 720 mm equiv. and 1000 mm equiv.

Could be it is unique to super zoom bridge cameras. Why don't you email the author and ask him.

I noticed the same thing so I emailed Friedman about this specific statement in his book. His reply was that it actually says 1” when wide open (or something similar that meant wide angle instead of fully zoomed to 600mm). I was just reading it wrong. He’s very good at promptly answering questions.
I didn’t notice the picture showing otherwise.

Thanks for the official clarification, Ron. I have two bridge cameras from 2010 and 2012 that will do that, so I figured he must have meant full zoom to have made a special note of it; otherwise what's the big deal?
He's dealt with bridge cameras before. Maybe just not super-zooms. I had this focus issue pointed out to me by a professional lady photographer from Seattle that used to teach photography at a German university. And she didn't know I had a fixed-lens camera, just that was a zoom lens.
