D850 to the rescue and...

In December I spoke to a friend photographer in Pensacola. I took my D850 for her to handle that afternoon and let it at that.

Last month I told her that I would loan her the camera for her to really try and gave it to her two weeks ago, letting her know she could use it for a couple of months since I feel I am under using it.

This week-end, in an unrelated meeting, she told me that her camera (a D800) had an issue (locked mirror). She went to the D850 that she had already used on a daily basis.

She could not believe how versatile the camera was and how easy to use it was. She also agreed that this camera is a huge step up from the D800/D810 sooooo...

She now has a D850 on order. Guess I'll see my camera back sooner than I expected, not that I am complaining.

Yeah, the first hit is always free and then you are hooked. I shot with an 850 while I used an 810 as my best body. B&H was happy.

Ron, you are a kind and generous man - I occasionally loan my photographer son a flash or a even a lens if he’s shooting an event, but not my 5D4! He can have it when I’m dead, but not before 💀

I never loan my gear to nobody, for no reason. <> Sorry!

For me gear is just that, gear. Folks are way more important.

Weirdly enough I have the same reaction when it comes to cars. I have two 1972 cars and I use them for regular stuff, I do not show them off or anything like that. Couple of folks try to get me to into shows and my reaction is always the same:

- Those are cars, point A to point B, that's it. If you want to take them to a show, I loan them to you. I just do not care.

Stuff is stuff.

It is good to hear from you. Yes, the D850 is a game changer. Lots of posts about the fact that you have to be careful what lens you put on this beast to get the best results.
Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, it seems to greatly improve any lens you put on it. I agree, the D850 is a game changer. I just finished shooting my new Nikon 500 5.6 lens on the D850 and wow, it blew me away. I will be posting some sample shots soon.

If she already has a D800, the D850 isn't that much different, except for pixels.

Agree. I loan my equipment all the time if its not in use. Better to be used than sitting on my shelf.

As for the risk? I never cry for something that can't cry for me.

Tell that to those who have owned or keep a D800 as a backup camera.

There are many improvements from the DR, the invariant sensor, the incredible buffer, the list is long (not to mention the finally articulated display with touch screen*) in this camera compared to the 'original'.

The D810 was a flop in my opinion because nothing addressed photographer's needs, it was a 'videographer' step up. I rejected that camera as a sales gimmick.

------
* She uses frequently due to her specialization.

I use the 800e as a back up body, or a second camera when I need two bodies. I love the 800 but the 850 is a major advance.

Well said. Materialistic things are just that. People are much more important.

The D850 has 45.7 megapixels vs the D800 having 36 megapixels. The D800E was Nikon's first full frame DSLR to be absent a low pass filter. The D850, no doubt is the best of the D800 series. Just as the D500 is the best of all the Nikon crop sensor DSLRs. My father loaned me his Minolta SRT-101 SLR to me on many occasions. He sold it, when we both realized, that digital cameras were becoming very popular, among many amateur and professional photographers. I have a friend who still shoots with the D810. With no desire yet, to upgrade to the D850.

Likely the most over rated stat of a camera but it will suck people in. Has its grounding in the "phone" wars of whose phone has the most pixels. But keep your friend from shooting side by side with both cameras on a shoot or the D810 is likely going second team. The 850 just outperforms the 810 to a frustrating degree. Especially in fast moving situations or in low light. The focus system is the biggest improvement of substance. The other items are all niceties but not enough weight to make $3k immaterial. If they made it thus far they may wait for the rumored D6.

I picked up a D850 just a couple of months ago to retire my aging D800. I agree with many who say that the D850 is an absolutely amazing dslr. I also have a D500. The two of them are virtually identical except for the sensor. The AF system on both is a huge leap forward. IMHO, the D500 is the best thing out there for wildlife, birding, and sports and the D850 is one of the best, if not the best, for everything else in its class.
