Lightroom Question

I have a Lightroom Creative cloud account and so have the up to date version of LR. I shot a few photos yesterday using my Nikon AF-S Nikkor 12-24 1.4 G Lens. When I was editing my new photos I wanted to do a lens correction. But in the Lens Corrections Module in LR it did not show this lens at all. It used to be there in the past. The closest it had was a 14-24 lens. In fact when I first clicked on the module and checked the enable Module Profile Correction it did not even pop up with any lens automatically as in the past. I had to select Nikon, then select the lens which was not there. When I used this closest to mine it made no corrections at all. Wondering how I can get this lens profile back in LR. Guess my step is to try Adobe support. Wish me luck. Thanks in advance.

Using your subscription and a technical support chat with Adobe is your best bet.

OK. Just answered my own question. I found an article at adobe. Seems that the type of lens supported varies if you shoot in other than in RAW. If you shoot in JPG they may or may not work or even the there. Then you have to manually apply corrections. I was in a hurry to provide some photos of a house for sale so shot in JPG. No correction when the photo is JPG.

Is it possible that Nikon builds in the correction when it generates the JPEG in camera?

Yes, it does.

I have also had it not show my lens if I forget to do lens correction as the first step and do some editing - apparently that can through the poor little app for a loop. So the first thing I do is lens correction.

Yes! I was waiting for someone to mention that. I wonder why there is that restriction.

If you're in a hurry like that in the future, shoot raw+jpg. Never just shoot jpg alone. You have all the options then.

Maybe because the camera is smart enough to put the lens correction into the JPEG during in camera processing? If I had a Nikon, I would "test" it to see if there is a difference in the need for lens correction between RAW and JPEG.

My primary cameras in the Lumix system build the lens correction into the RAWs. That section in Lightroom is blank.

The Adobe Lens Profile Downloader (free from Adobe) will list all the profiles available for your camera and lens that may not be available for your combination in LR(you are free to download them). There may be some jpg profiles that some people have uploaded for your combination. As has been pointed out, some camera/lens combinations have automatic in-camera corrections. LR will also automatically apply a lens correction if it has one and therefore does not show one in the list; jpgs are rarely included. It will say it has applied one in this case. This has been my experience.

As an aside:
As for my Fuji camera, I use "X-LR : Automatically apply Fujifilm exif data in Lightroom"
at: http://lightroomsolutions.com/jb-xlr/
for my Fuji photos. It still applies the Adobe profiles unless you modify the options.

Hope this helps.

Richard

I import all my photos with a preset that includes the lens correction. That way, I never forget to do it.

I suppose if I wasn't so lazy I would have done that before now. Guess I will do it tonight.
