Lots of homes are 100 years old, but their interiors look modern. Take a look at home from 100 years ago.

100 years is not that long...Check out The Weald & Down Museum in the UK, They have a collection of houses a lot older than that

There's a famous saying that illustrates the difference between the Brits and Americans: Americans think a hundred year old house is old, while Brits think a hundred mile trip is a long one. Based on the few Brits I know, I think that's about right.

Almost every night we see on the news where another house falls apart in nearby Philla. I due think the brick layers cheated on the cement they used. Too much sand and not enough cement.

Are these newer houses? If so, then cheating is probably the reason.

When the Brooklyn Bridge was constructed, cheating on the quality of materials was rampant. Knowing this, Roebling specified more quality/strength than was actually needed. Smart move.

As Billy Connolly said when talking about Americans and their "old buildings" "We have new buildings older than them"

If you look at the images of the old houses you'll notice that almost all are build by/for people with means. The one image of a poorer persons home shows some questionable construction. I used to work in construction as a carpenter and on occcaison I would be called on to renovate an older home that wasn't build for a person of means. Myself and some of the other carpenters would have to work with those questionable practices of yesteryear. The common feeling was "They don't build'm like the used to - thank god".
