There are beluga whales in the St. Lawrence river but not as far up as the Great Lakes; I'm pretty sure that Niagara Falls will stop them. You may be able to see them near Quebec.

This is the view looking out on Lake Huron off of Cheboygan, Michigan on March 19th, 2015. It is when you can actually walk out to the Fourteen Foot Shoal Light.

Most of Lake Michigan & Lake Superior will look the same from January - March.

If you are coming in Feb next year be sure to dress warm and wear you’re hiking shoes or snowshoes as we call them.
You need to be careful however since there are no boat tours currently. The only whales you will see are those in hibernation and those that made it through the summer. We locals usually refer to them as “ beached whales”. Good luck in your planning and searching

I love the humor, yet there is a very small sliver of truth to the claim of whales in Lake Superior. There is a group in Duluth that began the Whale rumor long ago and printed T-shirts with a logo promoting the Lake Superior Whale watchers club , my girlfriend ( who will remain as Jane Doe and has been on 4 north shore vacations ) actually got fooled into believing last summer there were whales and was awarded a new Shark watching club T-shirt to rub it in a little more.

If you are serious about vacationing in the midwest I suggest a October visit , the colors and the food will be excellent, start in Milwaukee ,head to LaCrosse , cross over the Mississippi there and take MN hwy 61 along the Mississippi river heading north up to 90/ 94 , head east to Eau Claire and take state hwy 10 into Green Bay, enjoy the beauty of Door County and then head up to the "UP" of Michigan over to St. Ignace and hop on the bridge to Mackinaw City , take the jet boat to Mackinaw Island and enjoy an auto free / bicycle only island, head south to Petoskey , enjoy some scratch Polish food there and head to Traverse City, do the Lake Leelanau loop and head south on M22 thru beautiful towns and some of it right along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, head to Muskegon and take the high speed ferry back to Milwaukee. A credit card , and your favorite camera with extra batteries and your set. This trip is doable in 5 or 6 days with plenty of photo stops.

First Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Eire with the tip of Lake Ontario on the right edge.

Again, no whales, but a lot to see. Consider Minnesota Highway 61 northeast of Duluth, Minnesota. Fantastic scenery but in the dead of winter you may be dealing with -20ºF temperatures. Houghton Wisconsin likewise is very interesting in the summer

I am not sure of wildlife viewing during the winter.

My preference would be Death Valley National Park. Just freezing in the morning and frequently up to 50-60º F. mid-day.

Hello Mark,
As a person who has lived around, swam, fished and boated in the Great Lakes I can guarantee that you will not see a whale in any one of them. However, if you wish to see five of the most beautiful fresh watery lakes in the world please make your holiday here. Lake Superior is especially beautiful and if you have the time take a trip to Isle Royale for a day or two. You can get there only by boat or seaplane, but it is well worth it. Automobile and motor craft are not permitted on this pristine protected island.
Good Luck travel well

Check out some whale watching web sights, Boston Mass. has whale watching cruises. By the way unless you have eskimo clothing I would not go to that area at that time of year.

Yes that was his initial plan, however as he said in his most recent post he had revised his plan to holiday during the summer months.
