I buy all my equipment on ebay. Mostly from dealers that have a high positive feedback. I have bought used equipment too and have had a few bad experiences. Follow ebay's advice, take photos of the lens you received, return the lens to the seller, and request a refund. KEEP ALL records, including messeges to the seller and your paypal transactions. After you receive a refund, block this seller from your ebay profile so he doesn't show up again and give him negative feedback so others don't get scammed.

I recently bid on and won a sigma 50-500mm lens. Well when all was said and done the person "kangiwa" shipped an inferior sigma 150-500 lens. The lens has either scratched interior glass or junk in it that shows up on the photo's. I let them know they shipped the wrong lens and that I would return this and wanted the one I paid for. They have refused to send that one. "Bait and switch". After checking out the prices it seems the one that I bought sells for much more but mine was won on a bid. I think "kangiwa" just did the bait and switch because they didn't get what they wanted for the lens. I got it for $350 when others are asking for anywhere between $700-$1600. Has anyone had a similar experience? They should be required to send the one I bought since after the bid it is legally mine right? Any hints on what to do to get my lens? I've already contacted ebay and all they say is return it for a refund but I want my lens.

When it is too good to be true, it generally is. What did you really expect when you got the lens for $350.00 when others were getting closer to $1300.00 for similar condition. Lesson learned. What was their rating, I do not buy from anyone with less than a 100% rating. Your red lights should have flashed at the price, why was it so low? Why so much lower than everyone else.
Lesson learned.
I have gotten really good deals off ebay and your purchase is protected. But when a price is listed that is way to low, BEWARE.
Unfortunately there are folks out there who are always looking for a fast buck. Make sure you file a CASE against them and tell ebay that these folks tried to swindle you. THEY (ebay) will take action against them if the evidence bares that out. Make sure on the comments section you call them out for trying to swindle you with a bait and switch, this will warn others, if they read the reviews on this guy. By the way, did you read their reviews before you bought?

This problem works both ways. Can't comment on your experience but as buyer and occasional seller the great majority of transactions are fine. I tend only to buy used optics from commercial sellers but anything else not a problem. The reason I steer clear of optics is I once bought a Canon 50mm f1.4 which by the time I tested to my satisfaction (ie it was the lens not me or my camera) I was out of 30 day return/dispute period. Basically I paid a yard sale/ car boot sale price and got what I paid for. At least with ebay you get the chance of a refund unlike a yard sale.

I don't know about US law but in UK you can demand and get a refund but not demand the lens is replaced with what you hoped you bought. Take the refund, mark it down to experience and try elsewhere.

Ebay does favour buyers in my opinion. I once sold a samsung smartphone. It was in perfect condition as I always use a screen protector and 'jelly' back case. Buyer returned under not as described, with an almost smashed screen and more scratches than a farm truck! I protested to ebay it was not the same phone to no avail. I even compared original photos in advert with photos of what I got back and still had to refund.

Learned from that experience and now when I sell I photo serial numbers and include in the advert. If no serial numbers I use UV pen to put my initials or some other concealed mark which i then photograph when packing. I mention it in the advert with the comment that to remind the seller to return the correct item if they have more than one :) In the 7 years since I started this I have never had a dodgy return although I have had a couple of 'tryers' who suddenly decided not to persue when I told them.

Unless a bona fide dealer I have even ask sellers to photo the serial number or other unique identifier for 'their protection' if I buy a more expensive glass or electronic item.

I emphasise in my experience of 2000+ transactions (prob 80% purchases) almost all buyers and sellers are genuine and there are no problems. Ebay is a huge market place - there are items I can get there I would have no hope of buying locally. But take simple precautions to protect yourself against the few that are working the system especially with pricier items

I sold a stereo receiver on eBay to a woman who claimed that it was defective. After I had packed it, I realized that I had forgotten to pack its remote, so I packaged that separately and sent it. I had no reason to believe that the receiver was not working perfectly, but eBay stood with the buyer. She sent it back, but did not send back the remote. I paid $60 to have the receiver electronically tested and it was perfect. Even though I sent eBay the results of the test, they stood with the buyer.

Since the buyer did not return the separately packaged remote, it became obvious that she bought the receiver only to get the remote. Had I not packaged it separately, I would have lost the remote after getting the receiver back. Ebay let me keep the $125 which is what that scam buyer ended up paying for a remote. When a buyer says item not as described, the seller is screwed because eBay makes no effort to find out the truth.

Two of my purchasing experiences of a little more than a dozen online have been bad. One on Ebay that would have cost me more for return shipping than the item was worth (many years ago).
Another was on amazon so I gave the seller a bad review but did not get a replacement or refund until a month later when they offered me about eight times the cost returned to my C/C if I'd change my review.
I always check the seller's rating before buying now.
"Won" an item on Ebay a couple days ago and am waiting for it now - got my fingers crossed. There was a half dozen or more photos of the item I wanted on the listing so felt secure enough to PayPal the money to the the guy in Florida. His rating is 97.8% - not perfect but close.

Ebay and PayPal will gladly refund your money, and then charge the seller. You are not going to get "your" lens (if it ever existed).

I agree. Get your refund and let it go.

Last year I sold an antique camera case on Ebay. Guy paid right away. I shipped next day and he received a couple of days later via tracking. He gave me really high positive feedback (really like the case). Then not much later, Paypal took back the money stating the guy said he never ordered it.
I provided everything to Paypal including all sales documents, tracking and even his positive feedback. I still lost the case! Unbelievable! I have been selling on Ebay for over 20 years and been using PayPal since they started. Paypal did however give me back the money stating my good record for PayPal all these years (and I would assume Ebay as I have 100% positive feedback). This is kind of scary as it was a clean sale, tracking info and the customer give positive feedback and I still lost the case (which took about a month or so to resolve).

The price alone should have aroused some suspicion on your part. This is an issue which will involve all parties involved. Good luck.

A good and horrendous example of eBay's buyer first policy.

Yes, there are dishonest people online - and everywhere else. eBay has your back.

Disagree completely. I've only ever disputed two transactions on eBay and got a prompt and courteous refund on both occasions. Vetting the seller helps, of course, but eBay and PayPal back up the transactions. In fact, I am a little reluctant to sell on eBay because they seem to bend over backwards on behalf of the buyer.

I agree with AndyH , I've had a couple problems and Ebay & Paypal have handled them very well . I've been completely satisfied with the results.

I agree. I've had no complaints as a buyer nor as a seller.

It's unfortunate because I sell all my used equipment and lenses on ebay. All my items are in good to mint condition and I certainly dont bait and switch. I have never had a complaint or a return.
I wish my items would sell on UHH so I could reduce the price and save on ebay and PayPal fees. Some might feel the camera stores are fair, but I still do better at ebay.
