If you do not price your work fairly for your market, you do a disservice to photographers working to earn a living with photography. In order to determine how much you need to charge, go here and calculate your CODB (Cost of Doing Business) - https://nppa.org/calculator. Your fee should be: Your CODB + unique qualities you bring to the job= your fee.

You must have cut a dashing figure with your photo equipment while in a radiation suit! Now I know why your posted photo examples have that glow.

Yes! Ever since that job, I'm getting a strange glow in my selfies. My wife doesn't mind during the day but complains the glow keeps her up an night. Seems I began to glow in the dark. Regrettably, they didn't have a radiation suit in my size! I left my Haz+Mat suit at home and all I had in the car was a rain poncho.

I charged $50 for one of my first equine images sold to a horse feed supplier. Here's a novel idea, if this is your first entrée into this business and they are relatively new to this as well, why not trade services, one of your images for a few bottles of their best wine. Breaks the ice and give both parties an opportunity to see how it works out.

She needs to realize the benefits of your particular "solar" power and take advantage of the free illumination. Do you become your own fill light on set? Or are you bright enough to be a key?

That is a fun self portrait!

Greetings all!! My first post, so hopefully no mistakes. I have been doing some work for a local winery and providing images on some high quality note cards that they sell in their tasting room. It has been going well so far, but after proposing I could also provide images for their web site, wall art, etc., they now have interest in that. I typically charge for downloads and do little printing (don't have to pay/report sales tax for electronic delivery in CA.). For some portrait work I do, I charge $25 per image, but discount with volumes. With the winery question, I am wondering if $25 is enough. I know the answer always will include "well, that depends", and I understand that. I am wondering what others are doing/charging so I can make a decision.

Does anyone have experience in selling images to a business for their advertising use and what kinds of rates are expected?

Thank you.
Greetings all!! My first post, so hopefully no mi... (show quote)

There are many ways to skin a cat. Per image, per hour, per session, per project etc. What matters is that you cover your total cost, equipment depreciation and then add expected gain. Together that can be the guide for your work value. Charging an amount that will not cover these bases will not only be an unappreciated, unprofitable charity work that will also ruin other photographers doing business, but may also mark your service by word of mouth and make it hard for you to increase prices.

Thank you E.L. Shapiro and Gene51. All very good information and Gene51 is correct, I am not doing this to make a living. I retired a year ago and now spend more time on my passion. I am out promoting myself for portraits and some work with wineries (just picked up another one too). So while I want to make some money, at this point in my life I am not interested in getting too bogged down.

I am revisiting this post because I have now received interest in taking some pictures for a publication that promotes a destination to potential visitors. So, they are in need of pictures of places of interest in their area. I am still working on just how many and the types, but they are close to 100 miles away from me, so travel costs are now on the table. I think I have that figured out, but am still battling with what to charge for my services that will be fair and reasonable and will ensure future business. Again, not trying to make a killing, but rather to continue my passion. It sounds from these replies that charging a rate for the job is common and that it should include X number of images. I have shot weddings and have priced at $150 an hour for shooting time which includes PP, so nothing additional for PP. Once complete, however, the total hours invested are generally twice the shooting hours, so all totaled is about $75 per hour. I have also shot Bar/Bat Mitzvahs at the same rate. In both cases, all final images are provided via electronic download.

Samples of my work can be found at https://prestonphotography.passgallery.com/portfolio?brandId=0

Thank you all once again for taking the time to educate me.
