Be sure that the Museum of Natural History is on your list. Their gem & mineral collection is said by some to be superior to the one at the Smithsonian. They also have a walk-through butterfly exhibit, if you are into that sort of thing.

It's been a long time since I visited NASA's Manned Space Flight Center, but I'd check to see what is available there.

There are a number of sites important to Texas History in and around Houston, including the San Jacinto Battlefield nearby and Sam Houston's home in Huntsville, about an hour up the road. There is also a good transportation museum in Galveston. Coastal bird habitats are within driving distance in either direction. What's available to see and photograph will vary depending on your timing in the area.

The farther you are willing and able to drive, the more additional opportunities there are. But distances get pretty long pretty quick.

Also, have a walk through downtown; there some interesting buildings and sculptures, especially around the theater district. The Houston skyline is photogenic in my mind. I think one of the best vantage points for the skyline is just west of town between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive.

Hope this helps.

If you've any interest in the space program, the Johnson Space Center is a MUST. We've visited several times, and there's always something interesting to see. The Saturn 5 rocket (used in the moon launches) is HUGE.

All of these suggestions are great. Beware, if you haven't visited before, Houston is spread out geographically. It is a long distance between many of these sites. Organize your time to maximize light golden, blue and other, and don't get caught looking at sunrise or sunset through your car window. Unlimited mileage on your rental car is in order.
