They usually perch low, hunt from the air flying fast and low and they are, more often than not, just out of range. I see a lot of them in the Northern Sacramento valley but I rarely get an opportunity to photograph them. I grew up calling them Marsh Hawks. These are all females.

Just viewed these....they might look a little better in download.

Phil, DDLs show off the sharpness and the entire set is fantastic.

Looks like she cooperated with you while she was down. I have been chasing a couple just north of Tubac over the last couple of days. You are right, you need to be lucky to get one to fly by close enough to get a reasonable shot. We just gotta keep trying, what else can we do! Thanks for the post Rockdog, especially like #4.

I enjoyed your Harrier post this AM. Thanks for the comment. They are very fine hunters and when they are out of photo range I still love watching them! I appreciate your visit.

Beautiful Harriers, Phil and can remember them slowly gliding along over some of the large marshes of other rivers that we frequently visited years ago! I really haven't seen many in the past few years but on the Chickahominy, many of the larger marshes are down river from us so will keep an eye out for them when I'm down that way. Take care!

Thanks for the visit Corky! They have an amazing range, I see them all over the west. They were probably the first hawk I could name. I learned them as Marsh Hawks in the 50's and my 1961 Peterson's field guide cross indexes them as Harriers/Marsh Hawks. They are a fine bird and I'm glad to know they are in your life too!

Very good catches. I rarely if ever get a shot of a Harrier I like.

Thank you neighbor! The Harriers have succeeded in teaching us a little patience.
