Didn’t he wear a robe, of sorts, in “Genghis Khan”? One of Hollywood’s greatest achievements in casting?

There's no way that John Wayne should have received 5 Oscars for all those Westerns. True Grit was a great film, and the Searchers. The Quiet Man almost didn't get produced. They had to beg studio bosses to make it. Because they thought an Irish story would arouse no interest. The movie, The Unforgiven, starring Clint Eastwood, was voted a decade ago, as the Greatest Western movie ever made. John Wayne was a legend. What about his movie, The Alamo of 1960? That should have been his first Oscar.

No matter, he was a legend, believe I saw at least 95% of his films and enjoyed them all.

Some of the greatest actors in the business have never won an Oscar. And many who DID, maybe others deserved to win more.

Same as with the films, themselves. Some of the greatest films ever made never won "Best Picture". Some that did, makes one think, "Excuse me????? THAT film won?????"

What boggles my mind is when the films that win for "Best Director" and "Best Picture" are not one and the same. A film IS the "Best Picture" BECAUSE of the skills and talents of the Director.

I suspect the film editors would take vigorous exception to that as a universal statement. As would, probably, the principal cinemaphotographers.

I stand by my statement. Of course the cinematographers and editors are important. But even the best editors and camera work can't make a marginal film into a standout one. And the opposite is true. One of the most beautifully photographed movies I've ever seen was one of the worst films ever made: "The Blue Lagoon". Another brilliantly filmed and edited movie was "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger", with Clinton Spilsbury in the lead role. He was so bad that his dialogue had to be dubbed by James Keach.

Point is, that you can have the best editors and the best camera guys in the business, but without the acting talent and the Director to "direct" them, you don't get "Best Picture".

A couple of my fav Duke flicks that weren't mentioned are "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and "In Harm's Way." I never considered Duke much of an actor and I suspect he knew was never going to be misconstrued for Olivier or the up-and-coming, new kid on the block, Brando, but he was a proven, box office draw through out the fifties. My fav Duke flick is his "The Quiet Man", a beautiful, lyrical ode to the Emerald Isle and its quaint adherence to its centuries old customs and ethos, in post WWll Ireland. But who ever thought "The Alamo" was Oscar-worthy. Seriously?

I agree. The 1960 version of the Alamo was produced, directed, and starred by John Wayne. That was a 3 hour blockbuster movie, with a great cast of already well known actors. John Wayne put his heart and soul in the making of that movie. He didn't win a Best Actor Oscar for it. And should have. That movie was box office success. And neither did any of his great supporting casts get much recognition. Burt Lancaster won the 1961 Best Actor Award for Elmer Gantry. He too, was a great actor.
