Yes, Canon has a zoom lens with the same basic specs as the Nikon version. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II.

Considering the Nikon D850 but don't know which lens to select....I will be doing close up's of flowers, paintings and taking images of students and my paintings which can measure 48 x 48...

I have two lenses for the 810, the micro 105 and the 24-70, both previously mentioned in the responses. Each is superb at what it is intended to to. Were I with your plans, I would opt for the 24-70 first, then when you can get the 105. I have waited on the 70-200 since I do almost everything other than macro with the 24-70. For you needs the 24-70 would be a great choice.

I wouldn't worry too much with the distortion on the 24-70. Lightroom will correct lens distortion with the click of a button. It will have a greater range of use than any of the prime lenses mentioned.

Look at the Tokina 100mm f2.8 FX macro lens. It's rated higher than the top 3 competitors and is only $340. I got one and love it! Great for macro and portraiture.

That is amazing detail in that dragon fly, Congratulations!

If I were going to have one lens for a D850, it would be a Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 FX AF-S G ED. When you refer to "close ups of flowers," not sure if you are talking about macro. This is not a macro lens, but will focus at about 1' and the optical clarity is outstanding. So, as long as your focus is good and your hand is steady, you can crop. The dragonfly is shot with this lens on a D810.

It will definitely excel at the shots of students and paintings and allow you to take full advantage of the light light performance of the 850.

I Agree on the 60mm (which I have) which I use with my D850's or the 105mm.

Cant say which lens will work best for that. Get the best you can afford, bodies will change but a good lens is something that you will hold on to and use for ever.

I agree. I have had the 105mm f2.8G with VR for over 10 years and it is a great macro lens. It allows a longer working distance for true macro work.

But I recently bought the 60mm f2.8 for copy work. The shorter focal length will allow much more convenient working distances when photographing paintings as large as 48x48.

I do suggest that you use a macro lens for this work. In addition to the distortion issues discussed above, macro lenses are designed to focus on flat images, where the corners are farther away from the lens than the corners are. A macro lens will also serve better when you are photographing works that are smaller than 48x48 and need to get correspondingly closer.

I should also have mentioned that the 60mm macro will also serve you very well as a general use 'normal' lens while you are deciding what your second lens will be.

The 105mm micro-Nikkor is a great lens. You should also consider the 60mm micro-Nikkor.

1. macro lenses have a flat field of view. No barrel or pin cushion distortion. This is very important for copy work.

2. Because your paintings are rather large you may find the 105mm to be too long as you will need to back up further.

3. I would suggest reading a book on photographing art works.

LensTip.com does extensive lens testing. This is from their distortion testing of the Nikon Nikkor AF-S 24-70 mm f/2.8E ED VR, 60mm micro, and 105mm micro lenses. With a zoom lens, you would need to do corrections to make the paintings straight.

Good news is that the camera can do that for you - in camera - as it does have all the correction tables for distortion - this goes for JPEG outputs - Raw you have to do outside the camera. Most PC photoapps do have correction tables so it is not a big deal at all - just make sure the app has correction tables for the lenses you use. And BTW - it is really mostly noticeable when you take pictures of brick walls.........................

Macro 105 fantastic glass but you will have to look at focal stacking for lectured work, or you will have soft parts in the image which works in a photograph but not in paintings this is my opinion only

Second that motion!!! The af-s Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR lens is my GO TO lens. If I got robbed and the thief left me just one lens in the house, and it was the 2.8 70-200, I'd be so ever grateful and still be in business for just about everything. If the thief took it too, I'd cry like a baby.
