This has been discussed in the past, but I'm curious. Why is it so many new members do not list their location. What are they afraid of? Ones location is very general, not specific at all. Are new members worried someone will use the location to track them down or identify them!?
My locations are listed as Southeast and Southcentral Pennsylvania, not very specific at all. I personally find it helps identify with other members and their photography when you have a general idea of where they are located. For example, since I live in Pennsylvania the other members know I'm an American. Since my username is pretty much my name, if I didn't list my location some folks may think I'm in the UK, more specifically the land of my great, great grand parents, Scotland.
Being located where I am, I can more easily relate to users located in SE PA, DE, northern MD, because these are areas I'm familiar with, not to mention the south Jersey coastal area, the Eastern shore of DE and MD and VA and the outer Banks of NC, because these are areas I'm familiar with. Sorry, I said not to mention, but did anyway, my bad; not.
So what's up with not entering a general location when signing up, or going back and entering it, eventually.
For the folks that enter cutesy locations like third planet or the valley next to the mountains, that's just as useless as no location.

I agree. I particularly like to know that there are other photographers from Washington State.

Most people probably appreciate the privacy.
But I'll admit, a location does come in handy for figuring what part of the country images may be taken, especially if the thread title is "My Back Yard" or the location is not defined. We can figure that shots with mountains are not South Florida...
I used one of my five allowable cities per the USPS. Close enough.

Been discussed hundreds of times in here. Bottom line is who cares what others list as their location.
If you want specifics, PM them and ask.

Or any other part of Florida. You really consider Audubon to be a City? I worked in Oaks for years and still photograph along the Schuylkill and Perkiomen and in VFP and the sanctuary.

I opened with, its been discussed before. Hundreds of times, probably not. Just because you don't care doesn't mean others don't. I won't loose any sleep over it but as I stated, I'm curious. Another thing I'm curious about is why some members react in a less than positive way when a topic that has perviously been discussed is brought up. Odds are there are virtually thousands of members who did not know about or participate in a prior discussion, and isn't that what social media chat sites are about, online discussions?!

Audubon, Eagleville, Oaks, little towns, sometimes I refer to them as bergs. Not sure where the cutoff may be, but I'd call Phoenixville, Collegeville, and KOP towns also. Philly is a city city.
USPS connotation is city, state, ZIP.... so that's why I used that word.

I agree. I can see an upside to stating ones location and don't really see any downside. If privacy is a concern, I can't see that stating the State or even City you are from presents any real danger to that privacy. As far as I'm concerned, I'd be very happy to be contacted by a fellow member who'd want to grab an hour during a weekday lunchtime and go shooting together on the westside of midtown Manhattan. I do however respect each individual members choice.

All the best.

You piqued my curiosity so I did a little sleuthing. There are no cities in Montgomery county. Collegeville and Phoenixville are boroughs and Audubon, Eagleville and Oaks are different designations of villages. Philadelphia is the only class 1 city in Pennsylvania.

Yes, seems odd, doesn't it? No one I know refers to Trooper as a village, it's just "Trooper".
When we go into Phoenixville proper, we "go into town", but we "go to Oaks".
Strange, yes? I wonder what people in other sections of the country call what.

If you are, then do a search and read the dozens of threads explaining the reasons behind it before you ask.

Precisely because people are too lazy to search and read the answers before they type out yet another thread of duplicate questions.

I guess...does that mean question and answer implies repeating the same questions and answers over many dozens of threads?

To me it means "I'm too lazy to even search before I ask the question"

May be duplicate answers, different readers?

The first 30 results for "location" returned ONE relating to member location.
Extremely poor titling is why I rarely (but do on occasion) try the search function.
80-95% worthless because of poor titling. I won't search for hours to possibly find something.
Yea, sometimes I'm lucky, but mostly not.

And this post seems to be directed at newer members, evidently not looking for old information.

I like to know where people are from online or in person. Interesting to talk about the difference between places especially in a photography venue.

Love the grumpy snipers and borderline troll like comments from some on here. The self appointed hall monitors of the forum who snipe away and attack. Really how old are you guys anyway? Best off to not reply at all and just move on.

Yes, it's interesting to know what part of the world they are from.
