Panasonic is releasing new 24.2 and a 47.3 megapixel cameras. They have a 5.76 million dot viewfinder and use XQD and SD memory cards. Looks mighty interesting.

Looks VERY high end. It uses the Leica ā€˜Lā€™ lens mount. Sigma and Leica and Lumix will have a decent range of lenses for it at launch.

Lagging the Canikon announcements may have allowed them to address many of the annoyances with those cameras.

If this package is a full frame version of a Lumix GH5 or G9, plus new features, it will be very attractive.

There is an old saying, "Slow and steady wins the race".

We might see that come to pass.

In my experience, no camera company listens to customers better than Panasonic. The rest of the industry has learned a lesson or two about proactive customer research from them.

Nice lenses with aperture ring. Too bad they didn't put the shutter speed dial on the camera but they can do that with later models.

Big numbers for $$ and MP. I bet they will be great cameras.

In a situation like this - two almost identical cameras - they should point out the differences right away. Looking at the comparison was an exercise in futility.

I was going to quote from an article in the last few weeks but can't find it. It had Canon's predictions of the camera market. It was generally grim.

How does it work when companies known for game boxes, microwaves, stereos, movies, hair dryers and Tesla batteries, introduces full frame cameras? Do both Sony and Panasonic see something Canon does not see?

Jerry,

Panasonic does the same with the GH5. There is a version that emphasizes video features at a cost of some photo capability.

It's certainly too soon for full reviews but I like watching Chris and Jordan. They think this FF Panasonic might be pretty good!

That's almost an understatement. This verifies what I said earlier today about Panasonic. They listen to their pro customers and give them as much of what they ask for, as soon as they can engineer it. They don't hold back some features for the next release! Many of the features Chris and Jordan mentioned were things that GHx and G9 owners have begged for!

I think these will be popular with their existing Micro 4/3 customers, especially pros using them now. Both are, at first preview, beasts in their own way. I can't wait to read a few in-depth test reports and see some samples from production units. As always with Lumix, it's okay to buy early, or wait for the firmware to mature a bit and the price to drop some. Their cameras have always seen steady, FREE firmware-supplied improvements during the market life of the products. (V-Log L not withstanding on some models...)

The actual Announcement video here and lens roadmap:

My take right now: On paper these look like very good releases. We don't yet know how well they autofocus and their frame rates in AF-C won't make pro sports shooters happy. The 4k/60p internally is cropped, sorry. IMHO they will certainly appeal to some hybrid shooters. Glad to hear Sigma will make more affordable lenses in L- mount as well as make lens mount converters for their present lenses to L-mount. Sony, Nikon and Canon have some areas they must address, match or surpass or they will lose some new FF mirrorless buyers. Not so sure folks will be switching from their current more complete fullframe mirrorless systems, but Panasonic has raised the bar and raised the stakes here in a few key features. Well Done Panasonic ! I will be patiently waiting for real-world tests by real independent shooters, not paid influencers. Cheers

Yes the lack of really competitively fast frame rates in stills: 9fps only in AF-S; 6fps only in AF-C says that Pansasonic's sensor and processor aren't as advanced in this area as some others on the market, especially the exclusive stacked front-illuminated sensor and processor in the Sony A9 which can do 20fps in AF-C with no viewfinder blackouts.

But still a very competent release IMHO. If you can afford them, they are a real choice. Cheers

BurkPhoto, do you think Panasonic's emphasis and focus on all this FF will hurt their Micro 4/3rds going forward ?

Yes they do. For one they see the real importance of the latest cutting-edge tech getting into the hands of the consumer quickly, not the drip, drip of Canon's corporate philosophy which won't cut it with consumers today. Sony and Panasonic know they can't just sit on their hands and expect to get sales just based on their name or any past products. If you want to lead in this shrinking global camera market then you truly have to innovate, and not rehash old sensors with a few new bells and whistles. Consumers nowadays are too savvy for that anymore. Canon could still compete for the top, but they have to rethink their corporate philosophy and strategies. Right Canon seems to care far more about the better profits they get from the corporate and medical products than the consumer camera market. That opens doors for others to snatch Canon's camera market share, which is starting to happen now.

Here is a look at how they compare in size and weight vs the Sony A7 series cameras:

Will Sony need a bigger camera body for 4k/60p cooling in their upcoming A7000 and A7SIII ?
