At 2:36PM the temp in Racine WI was -12F. It is on a warming streak. It was -17 when I went out earlier. Extreme winter this year.

"Once you get to longitude zero, further south is counterproductive."

I think you mean Latitude. Longitude zero runs north and south through London, England.

A few million miles closer or further away from the sun and life as we know it would be impossible. Coincidence?

Yes, it is an anthropic coincidence.

Temperatures here will be dropping below zero again, and I find that most unpleasant. On the other hand, it could be worse. It could be -88° F. Two Russian towns vie for the title of coldest town.

I couldn't find them, but they have rules for when it gets really cold. Something like - you do not go out alone, then children cannot go outside, then you do not wear eyeglasses, then you don't go out.
Temperatures here will be dropping below zero agai... (show quote)

The accounts of Oymyakon and Yakutsk, both in far northern Russia, ask why "anyone would want to live" in such places. It occurs to me that perhaps nobody wants to live there. They have to stay because selling a house in such a place would seem next to impossible, and in some cases that's where their jobs are. As for me, when the temperature gets below about +70-degrees F, I put on a coat!
