What difference does it make what the opinions of UHH members are, it won't have any effect on what Canon and or Sony are developing and will market in the future. Canon didn't become the largest photographic equipment manufacturer because they have a cool name.

What do you think, will Canon catch and surpass Sony or is Canon gasping for air?[/quote]

Not sure your question is correct. Canon’s share of the camera market is almost 50% while Sony is around 13%. Canon does not need to “catch up”. True Sony has a head start on mirrorless, but Canon is not going to let it’s share erode. Both Canon and Nikon will innovate in the new mirrorless segment and offer much better products than their current offerings. Sony will lose share to both.

So I wanted to ask the folks here. Canon and Nikon released their first Full Frame Mirrorless bodies in late 2018 and they were decent starts for both companies, but were of course lacking compared to Sony's 5 year head start.

A lot of folks are claiming that Canon can never catch Sony but I disagree, especially since Canon has been doing Mirrorless, just not FF. At least their first model the EOS R has Eye AF where Nikon's did not and they are priced closer to Sony.

Now one other thing I wanted to share, I recently attended ImagingUSA 2019 and had a chance to have a lengthy chat with a man from Canon's CPS while my 6D2 was being serviced and although he couldn't give specifics, when I mentioned that I think Canon will surpass Sony in 18-24 months, he smiled and said "Wait till the world sees what we have coming, it will blow people's minds".

Consumers always win when their is competition. I would also suggest keeping your eye on Nikon, like everyone else in the digital business, has some real surprises coming. Again, the consumer will win.

I have sold my 60 & 70D models, and bought an M50. It is an awesome little camera, much better than I expected. So for my backup, I bought a refurbed 80D w/15-85. I think Canon is going to be switching slowly over the next 3-5 years

I think all camera companies are gasping for air. Computational photography will choke them out soon if they continue with their conventual format.

Sony has been doing mirrorless since the late 90s. When did Canon jump on the bandwagon? I'd say they have a lot of distance to make up.

From what I read the first Mirrorless was the Epson R-D1 and that was in 2004 Bob.

Don't count on that, with the release of the new 400 and 600 in an EF mount, they aren't done yet.

Especially seeing as these are also lighter in class.
Canon also in a huge way made them considerably lighter on the front end making them relatively easy to hand hold vs all other lenses in their class.
Innovation still happening.

I agree, I think a 5DS/R replacement this year and their first 1Dx replacement in time for 2020 games.

The first replacement for the 1 Dx was the 1 Dx II. It is really tough to improve the best?

True I have the 1Dx2, I simply meant they will replace that line with a Mirrorless model in time for the 2020 games.

I have been a Canon Owner since the Pelix was introduced and up into the present day. Their cameras are well constructed and durable as are their lens. They will make sound decisions based on the market and their loyal followers. I will be buried with mine if I get my way .......Ho Ho Ho

Consider what the CEO of Canon Stated by saying yesterday he was not sure Canon was heading in the right way. When the CEO of the company is not sure how can the consumers be reassured?

I have two Sony mirrorless cameras from the late 90s and early 2000s. Didn't like either one, but continued to use them until Nikon came out with a full frame DSLR. I still use the latter of the two as it can capture IR.

By owning a product that continues to work? By a legacy of quality glass spanning decades? By a professional service that sets the bar? One has to look at a company that provides a full system and not a single comment by a CEO.

Who can make an prediction on how the market will move with accuracy? Time will tell but it seems Canon has some quality glass already for their mirrorless system in short order.
