So I wanted to ask the folks here. Canon and Nikon released their first Full Frame Mirrorless bodies in late 2018 and they were decent starts for both companies, but were of course lacking compared to Sony's 5 year head start.
A lot of folks are claiming that Canon can never catch Sony but I disagree, especially since Canon has been doing Mirrorless, just not FF. At least their first model the EOS R has Eye AF where Nikon's did not and they are priced closer to Sony.
Now one other thing I wanted to share, I recently attended ImagingUSA 2019 and had a chance to have a lengthy chat with a man from Canon's CPS while my 6D2 was being serviced and although he couldn't give specifics, when I mentioned that I think Canon will surpass Sony in 18-24 months, he smiled and said "Wait till the world sees what we have coming, it will blow people's minds".
What do you think, will Canon catch and surpass Sony or is Canon gasping for air?

So I wanted to ask the folks here. Canon and Nikon... (

My view is time will tell.
"What do you think, will Canon catch and surpass Sony or is Canon gasping for air?"
Gasping for air! They are focused on their traditional market very well. But that market group is shrinking. Photography is actually growing and Canon can't grasp it for fear of alienating their comfortable market.
I recall canon introducing a 100mp sensor in the future. However, overall IQ, amongst the FF brands, I’d say it is pretty close. In my mind, surpassing means providing as many features as possible that are popular. The difference will come from the person taking the photographs. But GL to Canon!
I'm inclined to believe Canon will continue to make smart business decisions.
At the rate anything technological changes anymore, I can't predict ten days, ten years, or ten decades from now! The innovators and/or astute business people or entrepreneurs will lead the pack and change the future.
Yes Canon has already done a 100MP sensor and I think they are going to put it into their Pro FF Mirrorless and release it as a replacement for my 50MP 5DS/R. I think this year will also bring the 1Dx3 and that it will be there last high end DSLR.

Spot on. Although features added can be worthwhile. Love Sony's Eye focus, it's still in the hand of the photographer that makes the picture. A snapshot is still a snapshot no matter what camera you own.
Watch what Canon releases as their professional mirrorless body, rumored to be ready for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Agree with the new tech Sony is bringing to the table, it is fantastic, but eyes in focus or not, you don’t want me to take portraits of you. Trust me!! Lol!

Don't count on that, with the release of the new 400 and 600 in an EF mount, they aren't done yet.
I agree, I think a 5DS/R replacement this year and their first 1Dx replacement in time for 2020 games.
...Canon has always been willing to dabble into other markets...how about a Canon Camera Phone...?
