Sorry, I wouldn't consider a reference to possibly having Jewish ancestry for being frugal any worse than a reference to my Scottish ancestry being overly frugal.
I would not call it hate speech at all.

Right, but...

I've seen situations where an ethnic joke made one person laugh and another get furious - both of the same ethnicity. Throwing out an insult or a put-down might be taken as a joke or as an insult. It's a fine line.

Your example of the frugal Scot is a good one. I don't recall ever seeing anyone get upset over that, but referring to Jews as cheap seems to be in another category - not humorous, put a put-down. No one ever said that being human was easy.

I'm sorry to hear that, and I bet it was in the Attic. I don't follow Attic discussions, but I don't recall reading racial, religious, or ethnic attacks here. Hopefully, admin with deal with this.

Not in the attic. See my post above. It was not an "attack".

I have always considered it problematic to use such a reference about any minority, ethnicity, or religion that you weren't personally a member of. Just like rappers using the N-word (with or without changing the "er" ending to "a"), it doesn't give permission to others not of that group to use the same words, no matter what they may think.

Whatever you call it, it's unkind and generally bad for our society to use stereotypical and insulting words about a whole race, religion, or ethnic group.

Yes, we have freedom of speech, and no governmental institution is jumping into the fray here on UHH to tell people what they can and can't say. But you don't have the right to free speech without suffering any consequences, and those who come across as bigoted, racist, or hateful frequently find themselves banned in private businesses and forums. I do think a lot of this is generational - ethnic, religious, and racially charged jokes and humor were a lot more common when I was a kid. That doesn't make it right.

Or the Irish (my ancestry) being heavy drinkers... It was probably said in jest - nothing malicious...

<< Maybe I am just lazy but also cheap. Maybe I have some Jewish ancestry somewhere. (:">>cut from jerryc41

First, if Mossad has taught the World nothing else, nobody should mess with the Jews.

Second, what about the famously stingy Scots?

Third, we have no shortage of mean-spirited people here posting in Chit-Chat, particularly when it comes to women (i.e., wife "jokes").

I agree, if a comment is bad enough for the attic, it's good enough for the aether.

"Off color?" The poster used an ancient antisemitic slur, one that is a key rationalization for centuries of persecution and murder. I agree with those saying there should be zero tolerance for hate speech.

It seems to me the ones who are "snowflakes" are the ones who whine then they are confronted for their hate speech.

I did not look at as a put-down. So what ethnic group might spendthrifts belong to?
I myself am usually very frugal. I keep my cars 10 to 20 years, I'm using a ten year old digital camera, my cell phone is a Galaxy S-III, my wife still uses her flip-phone. I USUALLY only spend on what I need. I have total control over G.A.S.. Yes, I must be Scottish!! And I also do have Jewish ancestry (Rosenplot/Rosenblath) from Germany.

On a related topic, there are a lot of ethnic jokes posted in Chit Chat, but I don't mind them, and I've never read a complaint about them.

Hate speech is not a matter of "ethnic jokes." Bigotry is mostly what the post on the Attic are about, and you are reading a complaint about that right here from me. If it is true that mine is the first, that is a sad commentary on the community here.

I agree with Longshadow: the comment was in poor taste but a long ways from "hate speech." I wonder how many of the posters before Jerryc41 quoted the posting in reference even read it, or if they reacted only to the initial categorization as anti-semitic and hate speech. Yes, hate speech and even lesser put-downs are deplorable, but neither is it helpful to find anti-anything when it was not intended--and the comment in question did use an emoticon to show he was not being serious.
I'm making this comment and then ignoring this thread--so don't bother with flaming responses, I'll never see them!

I'm sure we are all aware of what could be considered offensive speech and we should try to avoid going there. On the other hand, life isn't a bed of roses and we all, every day are in the line of fire. Sooner or later something is going to pop up and bite us on the a&&. Words are just words, sticks and stones..........
We normally can handle all the crap that life throws at us why let words turn you inside out? If we are so sensitive that we let words ruin our day what are we going to do when a real catastrophe hits? and it will. We are born so much stronger than that as human beings, don't let the jerks ruin your days.

One could argue that Big Mike1's comment was ignorant or that a private apology from him may have been advisable. This casual anti-Semitism is insidious exactly because it's 'low key', a 'passing remark'. To make a photography analogy, it is a crack in the darkroom wall that tolerated will destroy the film and prints or in 2019 parlance -- a virus that will ruin the -- processing. In my travels throughout small town Michigan where I grew up to Africa and Europe and Egypt, Jordan, Israel and beyond in pursuit of one great shot (through my lens) I have met photography lovers at every skill level and found them to be among the nicest, pleasantly tempered people around. So please, do not tolerate the kind of DEGRADATION that Big Mike1's statement represents.
