Thank you for the tip. I usually turn off the engine but due to the extreme cold weather, I have the heater going.

Just curious as to why it is important to turn off the engine? Is it the heat refraction?

It sure can be a problem. I'm not too far south of you and I drive very slowly with all the windows down to avoid that problem. I go through a lot of Grabber Hand Warmers in the winter. I have even opened the tailgate or the back window of my Ford Explorer and set up a short tripod inside the back and stayed warn wrapped up with a sleeping bag.

If you have organic material in your bean bag, be careful about where you store it.
If leaving it in the car, garage or basement it's a very attractive source of nutrition for critters😋.
Found out the hard way.

B&H sells a variety of bean bags. Which one did you buy, that you didn't like?

Apex Bean Bag. It does have some good features like a rubberized base so it won't slip but I find the edges too stiff and it's not very flexible. One other thing is what lens are you shooting. If you are shooting a heavy lens, 400 f/2.8 to a 600 f/4.0 with a pro body you'd better think twice about the pipe insulator foam on your window. I see people using their power window to raise the camera up to a comfortable height but with the weight of the bag and camera set up you are putting a heavy strain on the window motor. It will cost anywhere from $250 to $500 to replace that motor, I know. I lower my power seat and I do use the foam but a little bit differently. I buy 2 sizes of that foam insulation, the smaller size fits into the larger size. I cut a length of foam a little longer then my bean bag and place it under my bag if I need more height. I saw someone say that they could let go of their camera and pour another cup of coffee. That will work until the first time they drop their camera. One last thing about the Apex bag, it does come with a metal plate that fits into the bag allowing a person to mount a ball head or a gimbal head and a strap to secure it to the inside of the car door. It's not a bad bag it just doesn't work for me.

Critters? You'd better not leave it in your car at night because bears will find it and your car and windows will need help in the morning. I've seen the results of that and it's not pretty or cheap.

I bought a large size beanbag and it`s too heavy to raise the window safely. It took pounds of beans and rice--ugh! I use a pool noodle piece and it is perfect.
I really should use something lighter in the beanbag.

The color of the car does not matter at all. As was stated the animals have become accustomed to the cars. The camo is important so that animals will not detect you or your movement while sitting in the car. If a turkey sees any movement inside a car they will be gone very fast.

I have used two solutions with success. The first is a rice sock. Take an athletic sock (with no holes, of course) and fill with rice (uncooked, of course) and make a knot in the opening.
The second is even better, more useful, and light enough and small enough to carry in your bag. Take the athletic sock, find its mate. Fold mate and insert into original sock. Fold back the opening of the original sock, so that the whole item now has the same length as your foot. This works well. An added bonus is that if you get your feet wet, you will always have a dry pair of socks to change into.

I filled the Apex bag with rice and it weighed 26 lbs. Now filled with Buck Wheat Hulls and my wife can handle it very well. First time I reached back to pick it up (rice) I thought I would tear out my shoulder. Tried packing foam from FedEx, $5.00 a bag, now much lighter but too stiff.

Thank you for your response. I ordered the Tamrac 8" Sabi Sack Bean Bag. I didn't want the metal plate. I have more freedom by not using a ball or gimbal head. I want to be able to get out of the car ASAP, if needed. The smaller Sabi Sack version seems to be what will be suitable for my needs.

I would have a better chance of tripping over my tripod than knocking the setup off the beanbag. I use it with a 400 F/2.8 or 800 f/5.6. The weight holds it in place. It might be an issue with a lighter set up or a smaller bean bag.

I did forget to mention that the LensCoat bag also comes with an insertable plate for mounting a head. I have never tried it.

I do most of my bird shots from my vehicle. I made my own bean bag to hang out my van window. Today I ordered a Sabi Sack Bean Bag (B&H) to replace my DIY.

I tried to buy one from a couple local camera stores but to no avail. There isn't much interest in them, up here.

Do you use/own one?

I have one I purchased from Amazon a couple of years back and filled it with small styrofoam pellets for use on my car window. However I've recently gone to a large piece of foam pipe insulation...cut to fit length of window, split it down one side and it slides easily over the window.

I am with Bill on this one. From my vehicle I use a foam noodle ($1 from the dollar store will make three) that is split and slides over the window. Quick and easy and cheap.

Glad you found what you wanted.
I have several supports that I put under the tripod foot if possible.
First choice is my boonie hat or similar.
Second my backpack is used.
Third whatever is available that is handy and in the car there is always a blanket, pillow or jacket of some sort.
