Tony and Chelsea Northrup show you actual focusing of these cameras.

BTW the A9 is the only fullframe camera (mirrorless or DSLR) that could focus and shoot at 20 frames per second, even before the updated firmware.

I'm guessing Sony put in a newer focusing system to make it sell over the a6000. A hot affordable seller for Sony. It wouldn't surprise me if the a6000 is soon discontinued.

I'm seeing mixed reviews on the a6400. Tony Northrup swears it has exceptional tracking focus and eye focus. Matt Granger swears the focusing stinks. What's up?

The Northrups are respectable. They admit their bias (especially Chelsea for Nikon), but still manage to be objective in their product reviews while finding and reporting fault wherever it's due, regardless of brand.

The Granger review of the a6400 is terrible, a blatant attempt to deceive. Below is the comment I left on Granger's YouTube review. Other comments noted he used the wrong focus mode (and a small aperture, f/7.1 -- which I failed to mention), but Granger defended his review, calling it an editing error (which it was not, as he included video of the a6400's LCD) in a reply to another who called him out on it. Truly shameful.

Granger's a6400 trash video is found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymqE5xT0XKk

And here is my comment, which he'll probably remove if he can:
Wow, really? Pejorative, loaded language in your description and throughout your review shows you started out trying to show this camera’s inadequacies, then you used improper settings and technique – just plain trickery – to fake them for a critical review, perhaps knowing yours would be the only one in a sea of positives. You stated the scene with the model behind the branches is challenging, that the a9 is probably the only camera capable of successful eye tracking in such a scenario (at 7:51). Doesn’t the a6400 use the same algorithms? Why should it fail? Simple – it didn’t; you did. And a few token platitudes at the end of your video do not give any credibility to your “review.”

What really got me is your FAKE comparison with focus/tracking through the branches. Yeah, we noticed that you shot with the a6400 in AF-A, not the requisite AF-C for this scenario. OOPS! Then, your first shot with the a6400 had the model’s face blocked by branches, effectively telling the a6400 to grab focus on the branches, not the model. Worse, when the model moved her face between branches and the a6400 finally grabbed face, then eye focus despite your efforts to prevent this, you abruptly stopped shooting! After a brief moment, and after the model moved behind the branches again, you resumed, forcing the camera to again do exactly what you told it to do: grab focus on the nearer branches. This was either user error or intentional deceit. After considering what you did with the D850 (explained below), I believe you intentionally tried to deceive.

You properly shot the a9 in AF-C and began with the model’s face between, not obscured, by branches – and whaddya know, it performed as it should by focusing on and tracking the model’s eye even when she briefly moved behind branches. I will bet you the a6400 would perform equally as well as the a9 under this scenario in the hands of a competent, honest vlogger, as we’ve seen everywhere else on YouTube.

Now regarding your precious favorite D850: We all noticed you stood several feet back from the branches when you shot with the a6400 (6:58) and a9 (7:21), but when you shot with the D850, you bent over and were much closer to the branches, probably too close for your D850 to grab focus on them (8:07). Or, were you shooting between the branches to make your D850 look good and the a6400 bad? Why didn’t you include footage from the D850’s LCD so we could see what it was shooting? The sample image you offered (8:09) has no branches in it whatsoever! Unbelievable. This deception cannot be defended. Did you really think we would fall for such blatant trickery? Why would you stoop so low (both literally and figuratively)? This is truly shameful.

“I’m not meaning to be a hater,” you said at 15:38. Sure. At least you recognize you are a hater.

And really, who holds an ILC at arm’s length to vlog (15:50) (someone should introduce you to a tripod). Why even mention it - did you run out of things to fake-criticize?

I want my 18 minutes back. I wonder if you’ll delete my comment or do the right thing a take down your deceptive video.

Is it possible the a6500 will get the the focusing updated firmware?
