Hi, guys and gals. Happy new year to you all.
I am trying to experiment with story-telling; the old "a picture is worth 1000 words" idea. That being said, would you please kindly tell me what you "feel" when you look at this. To be more direct, what story do you think I'm trying to convey (or what story comes to mind for you)? If it evokes any sort of emotion, please tell me what, as well, if you will.
Nice job. The photo gives me the feeling of a WWII concept of a woman that promised to wait for a soldier who had been shipped overseas. I believe from the image she is missing him. But it could be that something worse has happened. She may have received a telegram notifying her he was missing in action or had died.
In a more contemporary sense, this could be a young woman who is remembering her grandfather, or someone else important to her who was a veteran.
Missing someone is painful.
"No! I was not happier as a man! Sure, I got to kill men in battle and destroy whole towns, but I always wanted to feel pretty, and now I am beautiful! Goodbye, Tom. Hello, Emily.
There are feelings and emotions here that are hard for me to describe. The best I can do is say, there is kind of a 'wistful" feeling here, (if I understand the meaning of the word) as if she is deep in thought thinking about things gone by, about the nature of certain things, or about the future of things, but in a contemplative sort of way in the sense of, what does this all mean? Or, what could have been rather than what actually happened? It leaves a number of possibilities. It does not appear to be a time of great joy although there could be a happy feeling in regards to who the person in the picture is. The emotion is intense, though not in a way that elicits an explicitly happy or sad way. It does leave more than one possibility. It does invoke feeling, and one that leaves one wondering just a bit. I like it. It is very good.

Her man is off to war and she is missing him terribly. She has gotten dressed for him, put on her makeup, and pines for him.

The setting looks classic, old, almost boudoir. The soldier's uniform is hard to date precisely, but judging from the rest of the scene, which looks 1930s to 1940s (-ish), probably meant to be WWII era.
She has a rather neutral to blank look on her face. I don't get much of a story from her. Of course, it's a side view, so you can't see much of her to tell. It's almost as if you have a model who doesn't quite know what you want, or how to play her part in the scene.
It seems like you were going for an "I miss him" look. There is a hint of a "far away look" in her eyes. But I'm not seeing elements of tragedy or longing here; just a vague thoughtfulness.
On second thought, she has picked up the folder with print in it, so maybe she's just rearranging her dresser top.

that is what I thought too.
I love you guys and gals :)
Thank you, so very much, for sharing with me. SOMETHING is happening (with a thought process/emotion), at least, so that's on the right track. I was going for a vintage modest boudoir-ish with period trunk, pearls, books, lingerie, chair, table, lamp and, of course, the photo (actually my father-in-law...yes, during WWII). I told her to look at it like she was in love with her betrothed in the photo but he is off to war. I've not done something like this, so just trying to expand my horizons.
The lighting in the image is incorrect and should be adjusted to set the mood. You've made this photo look like a stage shot. You need a better (natural/soft lighting) to surround your subject.

How about " Wish you were here." ?
It conveys sadness and longing.

The shot can be interpreted in many ways, depending on one's life experience, mood, or any other emotion.
It is a good jumping off point. Depending on the variants, you can go any direction.
My first thought was of a young woman up in the attic, discovering items that harken to someone's, a previous owner of the house perhaps, past.

Sorry, TSGallant, and certainly no disrespect intended, but my first thought killed any further consideration of your fine photo.
If you don't frequent the Attic, then you will have no idea what I'm talking about. Again, my apologies.
