barel distortion

I've toyed with the idea of buying a wider lens for my crop sensor, only to find out how effective the corrections in photoshop were. I started out by wanting a full frame camera upgrade, which then led me to wanting a wider lens. I now feel that I no longer need a full frame as well as a wider lens, as this would only add a smaller amount to the rooms. In a practical sense I know that the real estate MLS is a small file, and I just can't justify spending 1K to upgrade my equipment. Due to the small crop for the MLS I can't use a pano technique either. AND the shoots only pay $100 and I don't see shooting everyday.

From a business sense this is probably an excellent decision.

I delight in using a wider angle lens. Remember that when using your wide angle lens that distortion increases the further any object moves to the edges from the center. At the optical center there is no real distortion. This leads to a rather odd thing, if the object being photographed is relatively flat (book copy, or flat documents) there will be no difference in the resulting image if done with long normal or wide lens as long as there are no distorting effects in the basic optical piece of equipment. Of course it is important and basic technique to keep the flat work properly framed to keep the camera back and the object parallel to one another.

A fun exercise to see this is to take a wide angle lens and photograph/view first an egg and then a ping pong ball and turn each into the other. Then do an image were in the same frame the ping pong balls become shaped like eggs and eggs turn into ping pong balls!

Lee, I think you're missing the point on shooting pano. It is not about shooting wide aspect ratio images, it is about getting a wider angle of view with less overall extension and volume anamorphosis distortion.

The 2 images below have almost identical fields of view. One was shot with a 14mm lens, the other is a three image pano taken with a 24mm PC-E.

An excellent illustration of how a technique can over come the optical effect of just a wide angle lens. Well done!

Thanks!

If you use a pano head, or better yet, a multi-row pano head, it is even easier to get results like this or better.
