Rent an extender from Lens Rental in
Cordova TN. Call them. They can advise
you on best one for your purpose. I have
done business with them and they are the best. I will continue to rent from them. Ted Evans

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I'll probably rent the Nikon 200-500 although am sure it will be heavy compared to what I have so will take a tripod.

I am 70 years old and find the unit hand hold able.
Tips, I turn the tripod collar upside down and use it as a carrying handle. When I bring the lens up to shoot my left hand goes out on the lens just short of the lens hood, it makes the lens much more steady.
Use GROUP AUTO FOCUS and make sure that the main image in your shot has one of the four squares on it, that way you can be sure you will be in focus.
Make sure the lens hood is always on. Do not bump the lens hood too hard as it may fall off. Replacements cost about $50.00.
Make sure that the VR is on for hand holding. If your shooting at 1/1000 sec. or more you will not need it.
A tripod slows you down, if your planning on shooting birds in flight, a tripod CAN get in the way.
Enjoy the lens, it is very sharp and you will enjoy your results.
