I do see your snow falling, but not as it falls past the rooftops which are white from accumulation and not the lower half below the cars, where it is all white from the snow blanket. I easily see it when the darker buildings are in the background. And yes, I downloaded and magnified!
My lesson, stay in Louisiana and go out on a swamp tour while it is 78* on New Year's Eve!

You are a funny guy!

Lol. Take the shot during the day. But it wasn’t for you. It was for the op.

Hi all from snowy Wildwood MO. there is snow everywhere except in my photos. I'm sorry to admit that I hijacked the "Art" topic trying to get an answer quickly but felt guilty and started a new topic. It seems to me that digital processors filter or remove snow from the image. At least as the eye sees it. It is snowing quite hard here but it doesn't show up on images taken with my D5600 or my cell phone. the only place it is visible is when there is a darker background. I've used shutter speed from 1/60 to 1/3200 and only see the difference as blurred flakes against the dark backgrounds. I have turned off all of the noise eliminating settings, changed the ISO and aperture. I also learned that if you use an effect such as Vivid, a raw file is not created. interesting. I've attached a few for input / comment. Not really trying for a great shot until I can get the snow in the snow picture. These are taken from the doorway onto our deck trying to keep the camera dry. We're only into the third hour of a two day snow. We have about 3" now and the heaviest is yet to come. Could be interesting. Comments/suggestions welcome and appreciated.

So if I understand correctly, you want something relatively white (snow) to show up against something fairly white (sky) in the background? Do you think lack of contrast could be the problem?

Cameras do not see as the eyes do, nor with the dynamic range of your eyes. Without a flash to reflect off the snow and make it brighter than your background, you may be chasing the near impossible.

Also, Vivid setting only sets jpg files to a certain level of saturation, and should have nothing to do with whether RAW files are produced. Double check your settings in the menus.

Well I thought if I could see it I should be able to capture it. The Entire first paragraph of your note was condescending, and added no value to your message. I asked a simple question if someone new how to make the sensors capture the snowflakes that I could see but didn't make it to the final image. if you can't be nice, don't be anything.

BTW I have checked all settings and gone back to review files since I bought the camera. any time I used Vivid a jpg was created and nef was not.
have a nice day

If you use Nikon software you can select "as shot" and the effects will be applied to the raw image. However, some/most third party software will ignore it.

In an interview, I believe at Photokina, one of the Nikon executives was emphatic that the picture controls were designed with NEF files in mind. In fact with the NEF file you can change the Picture Control in post processing. You can also create your own.

From NikonUSA on picture controls:

Thanks! I have the Nikon software but have not used it. I bought and am learning to use Affinity Photo. I should do some RAW processing with the Nikon software to see how it compares with Affinity....

I waited until it got dark added an external flash, the door, hit BBF and took a couple of shots. The snow shows up well, so well AF picked up the snow for focus. Looked a lot better last night on the camera screen. OH well. Thanks to all who responded kindly. I understand your comments and suggestions. I understand that lighting on the flakes would have made a difference. Now I'm wondering how it would have turned out if I had used the flash in daylight. I'll have to try that next time.

one from last fall, one from last night, one from today.
I didn't store original because they are just snapshots to document a moment.

Snow is finally stopped for a while. 10+ inches. Time to break out the tractor and start plowing our road.

Thanks again

Are you saying that when you use the Vivid setting the camera does not save a RAW file but when you don't use Vivid it does? If you have set the camera to save RAW, or RAW+JPEG, it should do so regardless of your picture control settings. If it doesn't, you've got something strange going on!

Yes that is what I'm saying. I have it set for RAW+JPG and it creates a .nef file for all other shots except when I use Vivid scene setting. I just noticed it yesterday when I tried vivid to see if it would help the snow show up. I don't know if it is the same for other Scene settings because I don't use them often. I checked my menu settings and can't find any other way adjust it so I guess I have something strange going on.
Something to investigate I suppose. thanks for the response

The images were not downloadable, so could not tell what shutter speed. Could be that the shutter speed is too slow to see moving flakes and they are too small to show trails?

Please read the earlier part of the thread. Experiments included wide range of shutter, aperture and ISO. The sensors just don't pick it up without a background to give contrast or a light source on the flakes.

Wow, you must be super sensitive. Sorry about that. If I had wanted to be condescending, trust me, I would leave no doubt and you would not have made it past first paragraph.
But as a goodwill gesture, I did some research for you. I think you must have the camera set in Effects Mode or Scene mode, rather than M,P,A or S or even Auto. Nikon manuals state that Picture Controls have no effect on RAW and was designed with nef files in mind. Further, there is a vivid setting where you can bump contrast and saturation levels to your desired output on the jpegs.
Then there are Scene and Effects modes, which include Vivid and Super Vivid mode within. Several of the "effects" modes negate RAW. I found a 3rd party manual that addresses many of them, like Night Vision and it had this to say:
You can capture the photo only in the JPEG format. You select this setting via the Image Quality option on the Shooting menu. Raw (NEF) files aren’t compatible with the Night Vision effect.

Several other settings in Effects mode had the same warning. Some even disable your AF assist lamp, some disable your on camera flash. I imagine the same would hold true for Effects Vivid or Effects Super Vivid.

So... take my reply as condescending or nice and helpful, the choice is yours.

Thanks for doing that research. I am not a sensitive guy, just saw no value in your comments. You could have started with your second paragraph and gone from there.
I used A,S,M and Auto before going to Vivid just to see if it picked up more of the snow.
The fact that a raw file was not created was just an observation that I noticed while reviewing the output. I don't use it often and never noticed that before. Others then told me that shouldn't happen and something must be wrong with my camera. You have proven it to be a known effect of Super Vivid Scene mode. Thank you for saving me the time to investigate.

No hard feelings.

It was snowing like a maniac and I was trying to capture it. It was SO visible to the eye and didn't transfer to the images I was trying to get an answer before it stopped. I'm still wondering if film would have captured it better. Also thinking I should have put my flash on during the day.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Do you ever notice that when there is a football game on a very rainy day, that from some camera angle it looks like a dry day yet when they switch to another camera, you can see the pouring rain? I’m sure you’ll be able to capture it another time when lighting permits it.
