I have a Nikon D7100. I would like to photograph some snowflakes. What lens do you guys recommend? (Without breaking the bank)
Thanks. Your advice is always good.

Any one you have already will work, depending on what you mean by "photograph some snowflakes". Can you elaborate on what you have and what you want to accomplish?

On a tangent, check out this guys "Snowflake a Day" work. Pretty amazing stuff using a Canon 1Dx Mark II and a MP-E65mm f/2.8. Not in your budget but really stunning to view.

I don't have a macro lens and was wondering what lens I need to photograph/capture individual snowflakes.

I’m pretty sure he means a macro lens to take photos of snowflakes.

OP, there are inexpensive manual Nikon micro lenses on eBay I’m sure.

In the meantime, what do you have? You might find a macro is better, along with external flash and tripod, but the lens(es) and camera you own already might be good enough ...

Nikon calls it MICRO, but that is what is used in the pictures you see.

I have a 50mm that came with the camera. I have a Tamron 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 MACRO 67 A20ASPHERICAL. I'm reading what is on the zoom lens.

Try using the lens at 200mm, between the max aperture for that zoom length and f/8 (for depth of field of the crystal and background blur) and find the minimum focus distance for that zoom, that is: how close can you get and still auto focus. This will be easier on a tripod so you can control the camera without having to have it held to your eye while you experiment. Even without the tripod, use a single focus point and work to find a single isolated snow crystal and see that you can get. It would be the same process with a macro lens, just that a macro lens will / should be sharper and will be able to focus when you're physically closer to the crystal / subject. Use your flash to add light to get the crystal to sparkle. Take a lot of images at different settings. Look at them on the computer full-screen. Note the shooting parameters and consider any changes to further improve. Repeat until you get some good results.

Photographing snowflakes was first done by a farmer in Vermont. He became known as Snowflake Bentley.

But today we have Digital cameras. Here is one approach.

You realize you will be working outside when it is snowing.I piece of cold black plastic or black cloth works great. You can build an umbrella rig to protect the camera from the snow.

Extension tubes are an inexpensive option to a macro lens. They are useable with the 50mm that you have.

At the risk of being too political on here, I can’t help myself. So to answer the OP’s question; get yourself a good portrait lens like a Nikon 105 or other brand’s equivalent and go to any political event of your choice and shoot faces.

If trying to be funny, fail. If trying to derail, why?

If you don't have the skills nor the desire to be helpful, you should probably just keep to the many other active posts where this type of input is more appreciated ....

I’d guess you’re correct. Was watching the tv news and all its hyperbole and had a dumb thought. We all make mistakes now & then. My apologies. I meant no harm.
