I’ve been a monitor since last April. Had major setback in macula degeneration (long history with the disease.) OD did not expect much improvement. Have dry type in right eye, and wet type in left eye. Also, much retinal scaring in left eye. Sold all my “good” stuff, a Canon 5D/IV and Oly E-M1 Mk/II and all glass and associated equip. Over summer months, noticed slight improvement in visual acuity in left eye, and with regular injections to mitigate swelling and fluid buildup, vision slowly returned, though not to the level before setback. PP on my Mac is still a challenge, but I cope. Decided to pick up where I left off in April. In early December, my local B&M, Southeastern Camera in Raleigh, had just taken in a lightly used 5D S/R and I snapped it up at a pretty good price. Starting to build up glass inv. Limited in photo ops since I can’t drive and I don’t like to impose. So I shoot mostly local social ops, car events, etc. I don’t expect to post much in the coming months, but I will chime in with comments as I view all the good stuff posted by all the fine folk on this forum.

I was feeling a little down because I have macular degeneration in my left eye. Hasn't really affected my shooting yet. Your comments just point out that you can't feel sorry for yourself because there's always someone who may be worse off. Hope your situation improves enough that you can continue to enjoy the hobby.

Welcome back. Glad your vision has improved and may it get even better.
Since you can't drive you might consider doing table top macro or planting a lot of plants to attract birds and butterflies to your yard. I have two flower beds and about 40 potted plants plus multiple feeders and homemade bird baths (upside down flower pot with the saucer on top).

I certainly can sympathize with you and what you are going through with your vision problems. While I don’t have macular degeneration, I do have other vision issues. I am totally blind in my left eye, and have what is called a Vitreous Detachment in my right eye, plus I have a cataract forming in the right eye as well. My ophthalmologist, even though he has done thousands of cataract surgeries, has said it would be a greater risk for me to have cataract surgery than anyone else simply because I am blind in my left eye, which even though the risk of problems is low for most people, it is much higher for me. On top of that, at my last visit to my retina specialist, it seems there is another issue with my right eye starting and he wanted to see me in 6 months, so I have an appointment with him the end of this month.

I think losing one’s vision is something that some people do think about. But for anyone with vision a problem like yours and mine, it become a much bigger issue that can and does affect your life greatly. I know the thought and fear of losing my eyesight is foremost on my mind every day. I think about it all the time and it has impacted my life quite a bit. I have not done much photography or anything else lately, some of that because of doctor’s advice to be careful about what I do.

I think that it is great thing that you have bought another camera and lenses, and are going to get back into photo taking. Not being able to drive does present additional problems. Hopefully you will be able to take photos in your yard or nearby as a start. Maybe there some Hogs that are local to you that you might be able to meet up with for some photo ops. I wish you the best of luck in getting back into photography, and more importantly, continued improvement in your eyesight.

Glad you’re back Dean, and if you ever need a ride to Southeastern or another Raleigh photo destination, just shoot me a PM.

Cheers,
Chris

Welcome back, Dean. My MIL developed macular degeneration at age 85 but didn't have extra treatment and her vision narrowed over the next six years. Having diabetes, I am at higher risk as I age. If the rest of my organs don't fail me I suspect my eyes will sooner or later. Your post gives me hope that I'll be able to participate in photography for awhile and adapt if and when my eyesight goes bad.
Looking forward to any wisdom you impart, hopefully many years from now.
