I have a Nikon D7500 with a 70-300 lens and will be going to Ding Darling on Sanibel Island to photograph birds. What would you suggest to get more reach since I think the birds won't be very close to the road.

Thanks!

I rented one for a trip and it was great. Can take sharp pics at 500mm hand held. https://www.borrowlenses.com/ They will ship to UPS Store etc so you don't need to travel with it.

I use the Nikkor 200-500 with both full-frame (D810), and crop (D500) with pleasing results.

I went there and shot exclusively with my D7000 and Nikon afs 70-300. There are several spots right alongside the road where this lens has enough reach indeed. Have a look at my results.

Tamron 150-600mm G2 will give you the real reach you need and not break the bank.

I would suggest the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens. I have been using that lens on my D500 and love the results. I believe your D7500 has an option on focusing for GROUP AUTO FOCUS. I use this and as long as one of the four lite squares is on the bird it is in sharp focus.

200-500 is great lense. it also weight 83 ounces or about 4 times the weight of the lense you reference. so if that is not a problem go for the 200-500. great lense I use it all the time(although I am not a birder)

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I'll probably rent the Nikon 200-500 although am sure it will be heavy compared to what I have so will take a tripod.

Thanks for the link to your pictures, you got a lot of great birds. We went a few years ago and mostly saw those that were farther away on sandbars so will see what happens this time.

I've since obtained the Tamron 150-600 and am very happy with it. Don't leave your 70-300 behind though as many of the small ponds there are right alongside the road.

Tamron 18-400 is your best option. The Tamron 150-600g2 would also be great for reach but would limit your wide shots.
