Nikon 300mm F4 ED AF lens?

Is anyone using this lens? I probably should have asked before buying it last weekend but I am very impressed with it so far. I'm looking to get a 70-200 in place of my current 70-300. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your comments.

I have that lens also, it's a very good lens, maybe not the fastest focusing as telephotos go these days but, plenty sharp.

I have the 300 f4 and am very pleased with it. I tend to leave a Nikon 1.4 tc on it most of the time, especially for bird shots. I also have the 70/300 and don’t care for it. You will like the newer 70/200 much better. If you want to save $ an alternative would be the old 20/200 AFs f2.8. It’s a very nice piece of glass if you can find one in great condition. Good luck.

Are you talking about the Nikon 300mm f4.0 AF ED FX? There is another old one called Nikon 300mm f4.0 ED AFs-D IF FX which I have, is very sharp, even used with 1.4X converter.

For clarification; the lens I have and refered to is labled: Nikon ED, AF-S 300mm 1:4 D. This is an FX lens, not DX

Which TC do you use on it. I have seen the TC14B listed but it is manual focus.

Yes. I got the AF(not AF-s) version. It was manufactured from 1987 to 2000. It was a steal at $325. It is very clean and sharp. I hope to get more time with it this weekend. It seems to have more contrast than the 70-300 at 300.

This lens is one I carry along with my 200-500 mm. Very sharp, very light, they repeated the formula on this lens when they made the new 500 5.6 mm. Yet another winner from the minds at Nikon.

I am using the AFS Nikkor 300mm f/4 as well as the Nikkor AFS 70-200mm f/2.8F VRII and am very please with the results. I use the 300 most often with a TC17EII and the IQ is excellent.

Yes, I have it and love it. I also have and love the AF 180mm F2.8 D EDIF. If you want something like the 70-200 but a bit less money, you can't go wrong with the AF 80-200 F2.8 D ED. I'd stay away from the AFS version as Nikon can't repair the AFS motor anymore.

What is your everyday lens? The Af-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1/3.5-5.6 GII ED lens has been mine for years. Its wide-angle flexibility has been extremely useful when the need arises. For special occasions I put on my 10-20mm for excellent ultra-wide angle shots, and the Tamron 150-600mm for nature (especially birds in flight) images. I did purchase the 70-300mm Nikon for medium telephoto shots, but since purchasing the Tamron, it scarcely sees the light of day.
