A week or so ago someone asked if lenses for DSLRs would soon be fazed-out because of the new mirrorless cameras. I said I didn't think so. I may have been mistaken.

I guess you don't read well. It says it's "pausing" production on EF lenses to catch up on the new mirrorless lenses. How is that fazing them out???

Even the longest journey begins with the first small step. I hope you are right. I use DSLRs too. Don't want to "switch" to a new system.

There is no talk about "phasing out" Canon lenses. Canon simply announced that they will not release any new DSLR lenses in 2019, and they probably will not produce many new ones after that. Current lenses will remain available in the foreseeable future. Furthermore, Canon has a very mature stable of excellent lenses so there is no need to worry.

Full disclosure: I am a Sony mirrorless shooter, and I love my mirrorless system. But if you are happy with your Canon setup I see no reason to switch now.

I felt the same way for quite some time, but recently decided to make the leap. I'm selling my 7DII and tomorrow plan to order the EOS R along with the R 24-105 lens. After reading all the hands-on reviews I am eager to see for myself what the camera can do. I'm also ordering the adapter so that I can continue to use the 6 or 7 L lenses I have. I don't think I would ever get rid of my 100-400 L II. I'll be keeping my 5DIV. The EOS R uses the same sensor so it will make for an interesting comparison.
I admit, I turned up my nose at mirrorless for a long time, but even though DSLR's will be around for a long time mirrorless is the future. From comments from pro's when Canon (not "if") introduces a pro model with a high enough frame rate there will be a lot of movement in that direction by the pro's.
Ken Rockwell has a very interesting review of the EOS R. Not everyone likes him but I find that he packs a lot of useful info into his reviews. I especially liked finding out how the EOS R focuses differently from a DSLR and why it doesn't have, or apparently need, a micro-adjust feature.

That doesn't say anything about phasing out lenses at all ( which is absolutely nonsense anyway)! They just prioritize in building out there R-lens catalog in the coming year. They do not have to worry about the existing glass, they have pretty much everything covered there already!!

Curiously, I remember 1987 when Canon stopped manufacture of their FD mount lenses in favor of the new EF line. My friend, Acker, had even more Canon gear than I had Nikon stuff. He was not a happy camper. That whole thing kinda started this same way. I just hope that Nikon still continues with the F-mount as they did when they went AF.

But many of us have switched to the "new system" the compact superzoom. The Sony, Panasonic, and now Canon have 1" sensor cameras.... amazing what these little in pocket cameras will do. And they take much better photos than the finest DSLR because they are there and now, while the heavy DSLR is in the closet.

I appreciate your comments, d. But I have been with Nikon since 1980 and my gear is my second love. I've never had a problem with weigh or bulk (at least not with my camera gear), even when I was using an F4S with a 400mm AF lens. At this late point in my life, I'm very contented to continue with my D850 and Df.

With all the DSLRs already sold and in use, I believe it will be quite some time before any camera company stops making lenses for them. That would remove a huge market and the companies would not wish to lose that income.
