I think you should enter this in a contest. It is so beautiful and so different from most owl shots. ****

I find eye contact in an image can be "Eye Catching" This owl agreed.

Camera: Nikon D800
Lens: Nikon 200-500 mm f/5.6
Shot at 320 mm
Exposure: Auto exposure, Aperture-priority AE, 1/1,250 sec, f/8, ISO 1600, Compensation: -1/3

Enjoy! Comments always appreciated.

Stan,

Nice image. Thanks for sharing. Just a thought...I assume the owl was not moving much. With ISO 1600 and so much shadow, noise could be significant. But you could have lowered shutter speed to 1/500, ISO 400-500, and probably have needed no compensation. I take many bird pictures and have found I too often use high shutter speed and high ISO because I set my defaults high for quickly moving subjects and don't adjust them for still subjects, but I'm trying to remember to drop the shutter speed and ISO when my subjects aren't moving much. Not a criticism of this photo, just a suggestion for future efforts...for what it's worth. Keep shooting and sharing.

My wife and I would call that, The Look, after our 20 month granddaughter's looks she sometimes gives to people. It is an ominous look.

For me it comes from an old Twilight Zone episode where a little boy (possibly Billy Mumy) has the power to, "send", his family or outsiders to the cornfield if they do something to irritate him. After seeing some photos of our granddaughter with that look we (I) determined it was the ominous look.
