I will be heading to Houston soon for a wedding, and hoping for some free time to do a little photography. I will be staying in the Spring, Tx. area. Does anyone have a suggestion or 2 for some great Photo ops?

Lonestar flight museum it’s at Ellington Field which is just south of Houston.
They have some World War II and vantage aircraft in there and a few other things it’s a new building and it’s really nice a lot of the aircraft were destroyed in the hurricane a few years ago when they were based out of Galveston so they moved the remainder of it up to Ellington Field it’s just right off Highway 45 and the loop .
Then just farther down the road maybe less than an hours drive is Galveston which is the gulf coast. There in Houston is a printing museum of printing presses throughout history they have a working replica of the Gutenberg press and you can actually press a copy of the constitution and some other stuff that’s very interesting also just depends on what you’re looking for there’s a lot there .

We lived in Houston for a year, downtown. There are some really awesome high rise buildings in downtown as well as mini-parks. The medical centers are another fertile ground for architecture buffs. The area around the Brown Convention Center downtown is a great people shooting place, particularly in the summertime. Great rail and bus service for a quick tour of the fourth largest city in our USA will give you perspective. The river and bayou park areas are eye candy, too.

The Museum of Natural History is also worth a visit. Their geological exhibits rival those in the Smithsonian, and much of their mineral collection is superior. Not sure what your photographic interests are, but there is a lot pf photogenic material there. They also have a butterfly habitat and exhibit hall. It's been a while since I was there, but believe that it's near the medical center area mentioned above.

Do an internet search for 'Huston Wall Murals'. I was there a year ago doing just that. Spent a full day shooting some artistic walls.

And when in the vicinity of NASA, take a stroll on the Kemah Boardwalk.

Also consider the Battleship Texas and San Jacinto Monument.

There's also Nasa out I-45 South, exit Nasa Parkway and head East for about a ten minute drive. Galveston is only twenty minutes further South on I-45.

The Federal Reserve Bank is located on Allen Parkway in downtown Houston which is a really pretty building when lit up at night. Park your vehicle and take a stroll along Allen Parkway; there's lots to see and photograph.

There is a famous waterfall near the Transco tower in the Galleria near 610 W loop & Westheimer that lots of photographers use for photo shoots. Of course there are many others suggested by the other hogs.

I love the water wall but I think they changed the name of the building from Transco to the Williams Tower. It is about a block south off Westheimer at 2800 Post Oak. It is officially the Gerald D. Hines Water Wall Park but known as the Water Wall. It is officially open from 10am until 9pm. I used to love to go about 2am and there would be people there looking at the wall. Not sure if you can do that now.

The wall is a 64 foot high semi circle with water cascading from the top. Once you step into the center all you can hear is the falling water. I felt as if I were in some jungle. Step out and you here the sounds of the Houston traffic again. The reason I love the wall at night is that it is lit up with lights and is very pretty.

There are lots of things to do and see in Houston and the surrounding area. Enjoy your trip.

I took a lot of photos at the air museum. There are wonderful old planes there. The only problem I had as a very raw newbie then, was that the planes are very close together. i did not have a wide lens so I could only get parts of each plane. I ended up taking several shots from front to rear and stitched them together. They came out fairly well. If you have a wider lens than I, there will be some great shots. Please share when you get back. There is also the Houston Zoo if animals interest you. Also in Galveston in the evening, there are lots of opportunities for street shooting on The Strand. Good luck and have fun.
