Go online. Amazingly you can purchase “press credentials”

If you can pay $25 on line for an 'emotional support animal certificate' should be able to get press creds on line

To All,

Thank you for your feedback on this topic. It looks like the amateur photographer has lost this battle to the professional photo journalist and business owners. The only choice I have is not to pay or attend any events that have camera or photography restrictions. No sporting events or concerts attendance are in my foreseeable future.

Thanks all for your input on this topic

Gary

Gary, would you want people to grab your photos and use them however they wish? What if they said," I am not a professional ad agency, I just help my friends."? You did not lose tot he professional, you lost to copyright protection.

Although you'll give up a lot of action shots, and lose some image quality, a point-and-shoot such as a Canon SX710 (or one of the newer equivalent models) has some serious telephoto capabilities and would clearly pass the "pocket camera" test. And yes, in all my travels through major museums in recent years, including art museums, the cell phone camera epidemic has pretty much invalidated any no-photo rules, even of famous works of art.

You go online and “find” press credentials, you are looking for problems if caught such as being banned from the venue for life, going to jail etc. I am a pro freelance photographer and someone on the sidelines of say a football game that doesn’t know what is expected of him is not only recognized quickly but can get himself or someone else hurt. Research the venue and “ find” the correct person to get credentials.

That sounds fair to me. Just ask for a press pass.

I am finding it much more difficult to take my Canon DSLR into many inside sporting events...now I am being told that if you do not have press credentials, no cameras with lenses over 3 inches will be allowed. I went to the college football NCAA press conference yesterday in Santa Clara California...they will only allow the public to take pictures with cell phones or short lens point and shoot cameras. no removable lenses. This past summer at the White House, only cell phone pictures are allowed.

Are other photographers finding the same frustration and restrictions taking pictures at concerts, sporting, and other public events with your better removable lens camera equipment?

Perhaps I need to find a way to get a photographer press credential so I am not so limited.

Any suggestions?

Actually I have seen Cell Phones banned a Pro Golf events. Was in Dearborn MI for a Sr. Pro Golf event and all cell phones had to be checked at the entrance. No Exceptions.

I notice that some museums do not allow photos, cell phone or otherwise, in venues they are showing that they do not own. Many use cell phones and then the monitor comes up to say 'no photos please". But if the museum owns the artwork, photos or paintings, it seems that in some cases it is alright to snap a cell phone photo. Recent vacations to Europe and visiting churches do not allow tripods (some allow monopods) or flash and most of the time, "no photos". But if no one is watching, some visitor will invariably take out a cell phone to snap a quick photo. You also need a fast lens to capture nice detail inside a dark church.

I think the no-photo signs include no cell phone.
Some museum says no flash, or no tripods, but I have not seen "no interchangeable lens" signs.
It makes me feel/act like a thief of stealing a few shots there.
Can flash ruin the color pigment of a painting or carpet? Any scientific proof?

Some info on press credentials and event credentials. Try calling the press relations office of whatever venue you're interested in.

Because the pros can't perform their job with cameras clicking (even cell phone cameras) and cell phones ringing. If you've ever played golf you would understand.

I had that happen at a concert after I took a couple shots with a telephoto. I just moved somewhere else and hid within the crowd.
