from a reply on page 2 ....

The easiest, but maybe the most truncated analysis, is done by opening an image file attachment in a new browser tab and reading with browser extension = EXIF Viewer. You'll have to investigate whether you can use Google Chrome as your browser and / or whether EXIF Viewer runs in other browsers or whether similar tools run in your preferred browser. For more detailed analysis, download the attachment and load into another EXIF browser or into your image editor such as LR, PS, DPP, etc. To read all available values, investigate EXIFTOOL and how to dump the data into a sorted text file. To your question, yes, the level of detail you can obtain is a matter of the tool used as well as efforts the photographer may have taken to suppress the EXIF values that remain in the image file posted.

I am of the opinion that the camera used rarely maters, only if that camera has some rare feature that others don't usually have.
Lenses can mater a bit, but as burkphoto said, just store the original image and anyone who wants to see that info can look at the EXIF data and the rest of us don't have to bother with it.
Storing the original image is much easier than typing all of that data.

I think it would be helpful to include equipment info with photos that are posted. No need for exposure info such as shooting mode, ISO, aperture, shutter speed, etc. Just camera and lens. REGIS is always faithful with his bird photos.

I agree as well.
It's quick to see without downloading.
If I do want more then I will check the EXIF.

God forbid you ask these experts to post a photo.

In the EXIF information of some photographs the details of the lens, (model, focal range, etc.), is given, then on many of them it isn't. Is this due to the camera and/or lens or other factors?

I use bellows and full manual lenses that will not be in the EXIF data.

FWIW. If you want to know information about a posted image and the EXIF data doesn't have it or there isn't any EXIF data available at all, you could always just ASK

Yeah!

try Faststone Viewer; take 3 min to download and 2 min to install FREE
http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDownload.htm
I have been using it to downloading, organizing, viewing for over 10 years.
It allows you to view jpg and NEF(Nikon Raw) files; no dng or mp4 files
On the full view mode of your picture, the info you want to know will appear upon moving your mouse pointer to the right edge.

I wonder if one has to list the equipment used when entering a contest, submit a photograph for publication or sell a photograph in a gallery?

Yabut, that's what I'm saying - often there's nothing there to be seen even if a new member knows how to do that, which I'm suspect most do not. We've got "experts" here who have been members for years espousing their expert opinions and advice who have yet to post a single image that would attest to the fact that they can "walk the walk."

Some of us read the terms of use and decided on day one to post images sparsely or not at all...

90% of my life’s photos belong to former employers. It’s considered proprietary and confidential training imagery. I’m sure there are others here who tread just as carefully around potential legal issues.

The contests that I have looked into, yes. If you look in photography magazines, pictures include basic exif info.

Again, I want to thank those folks who post exit data. It has been helpful in my photography. I know some don't post exit data. That is their choice. It would be interesting as to the reasons they don't post exit data. I'm just curious.

I never remove the EXIF data because I don't bother to do it. I don't bother with the EXIF data because I think it's useless.

I concur ... with the exception of old photos.
