Over a year ago I purchased an IPad Pro and within a day passed the sound barrier returning it back to Best Buy. What it couldn't do was the killer for me. Stick with my Win laptop and an Android tablet. Apple has the GM behemoth car attitude of an era gone-by of We Will Build It, You will Buy It Because We Made it. No, I'm not fashionably an Apple sycophant.

Any device that is self powered will work with adapters. Devices that need power from host must not pull over 1/24 of amp, thumb drives and camera cards all-right.

I carry an iPad mini, transfer photos using an Apple card reader. Photos are stored in my iCloud account. When I return home I export the original photos into a file on my desktop for post processing in Affinity Photo, or use Apple's Photo App for simpler processing.

Unlike Photos, you may put your photos in individual folders for easy access.

You can create individual folders in Photos. You can even create nested folders. And you can name, rename, add to, delete from, etc. To create one, click “select”, select the images you wish, click “add to” and, if this is your first one, it will give you the ability to create one. Just be aware that it doesn’t really put a copy of the image in the folder, rather a pointer to the image. So if you delete the original you will delete the on in the folder also.

Connecting an SD card to the iPad is a no brainer and Photos preserves the original photo and saves it to the cloud if you wish...
A lightning cord with SD card reader is cheap and quick. Works great!

I have a 12.9 iPad Pro 2018 250 gig. I bought the Western digital WiFi 3tb storage drive for mine. It has a USB Or SD car slot so you can take sd card out of your camera and download your pictures direct to WD hard drive. But most of the time I use a USB adapter which plugs in my charging port on my iPad and download pictures direct from my camera.

I’ve had one of these for a long time. It works great in transferring images from the SD card in my Nikon D7100 to my iPad Air. But the new iPad Pro doesn’t use the Lightning interface, rather a USB-3. Are they going to bring out this for the new interface? And what if I should win the lottery and buy an Z7. That uses an ZQD card.

I think they have an adaptor for this application.

You cannot plug a USB HD into your Lightning Port and connect to an external device. Apple, frankly is stupid in this regard, limiting what their portable devices can connect to.

What you need is an external drive like the LaCie DJI Boss or the new Western Digital Passport Pro. Both allow you to seamlessly backup images on SD cards with the external drive slot or with CF and XPS with an external reader plugged into the drive's USB input.

Both have software that allows you to see and work with the contents of the drive on your iOS Phone or iPad. I prefer the LaCie Copilot BOSS app over the WD Passport software. I use the LaCie drive to watch MP4 movies when I am on a flight. I view Nikon and Fuji RAW files and open them in Lightroom Mobile for editing.

I think the LaCie costs $349 retail.

Oh, Cloud storage systems require a Cloud to connect to, which isn't always possible when away from home or in a remote location.

I would like to carry something lighter than my MacBook on trips and wondering about the iPadPro. However I was under the impression that I couldn't connect to an external hard drive for backup and for later transfer of my RAW photos. Anyone have experience with this?

I always use my iPad pro when on the road. I load my photos to it and review to see what I may not want to keep. I will work on some in LR and PS on my iPad. I always shoot Raw an,d save in raw on IPad Pro.
