To address those dreaded words of the photo judges - 'Why do YOU like this shot?'
Well, I like the composition of this shot for the way the lines in the rock face lead to the climber and the way he completes the triangle with similiar colors to the grafitti. I think the acute angle of the composition lends to the drama that is about to unfold. Two seconds later he was gone!
Am I reading too much into this?

Bmac nailed it! Rare combination of nature and man-made colors, outside shot and point of interest.

The angle of the rocks leading to the climber and the climber's position on the edge couldn't be better IMO. Soft fluffy clouds behind add, don't detract. The trees give us some information and I can't help but think it would be fun to lie and remove them 
The graffitti is equal parts repulsive and intriguing.
A very strong image IMO, Phil. Appreciate your doing the heavy lifting upfront!

Fine counterpointing in the composition emphasizes what's happening, aided by the slight underexposure. Good color, good composition, a special moment, a unique shot--checks off all the points for a fine photo.

Thanks Linda. I agree about removing the trees. It would really increase the drama if the scene wasn't anchored to the ground by them. Unfortunately, I don't think my cloning skills are up to removing them, but I will give it a try.
