My kids gave me a new iPhone for Christmas. I had an old Samsung/Android which I had no problems with and was very comfortable using it. In any event, I was surprised that I had to use iTunes to manage my photos and albums on the iPhone. On my Samsung once I connected via USB to my PC the phone appeared as a drive and I could copy/move/delete/create folder etc like any other drive. Very disappointing I could not do the same with the iPhone.
So, after research and I haven't' found a rock solid solution just a lot of ads for apps, including a Microsoft solution. I am willing to pay for the app, if it's not really expensive. I rather not go the route of moving photo to third party (Goggle, DropBox, etc.) and then download to the iPhone. I just want to transfer photo to/from my PC and iPhone. If you have an iPhone with one of these apps I could use your advise.
Also, I haven't found a creditable site that reviewed/compared these third party apps.
My iPhone does what you are saying when I plug it into a Mac. Do you have LR? If so, you just plug the phone into the computer and it acts like an external drive (at least that is what happens when I plug my phone in). On a Mac I use airdrop to transfer from the computer to the phone.

iTunes is a free app for all things IOS. You can download it to your pc, then have it integrate all of your music and photos that you now use on your Android. It’s is a simple procedure that takes place during the iTunes setup.
Then you can transfer that music and photos to your iPhone.
What makes you think he has a Mac? He has an over priced iPhone and a PC
I also have an IPhone and on my phone I have a Microsoft App named "One Drive". Any photo I take on my camera is automatically uploaded to this App. On my PC, I have the "One Drive" and I can easily access any photos that I took that were uploaded. Just note that One Drive only allows 5 GB of free memory. Beyond the 5 GB you either have to buy more memory storage or move some photos out of the One Drive.

There are increasing programs that allow you to transfer photos from cell phones. Cell phones are making inroads with younger and some not. This will soon with the 25 plus be the weapon of choice. DSLR's may suffer a loss of sales going into the future.
Next time you are out and about check the age group and what they are using to take pictures.
If you have a PC with Windows 10 updated, it’s a piece of cake. Just plug into a USB port and follow the prompts. I have an iPhone XR, no problem. Just be sure to watch the screen on your phone. You have to answer Allow when it asks to let Photos access this devise. If you don’t do that step, it just keeps telling you something is wrong and to try again. It even let# you access photos that are on the iCloud in addition to the ones on your phone.
I have been using an iPhone and Windows (Windows 10 now) for many years. I connect my iPhone to the PC via the USB cable to the phone. Then in Windows File Explorer, I click on the iPhone and open the folder DCIM. There are all the folders and files of the pictures on the phone. Then I drag the photos to the folder in Windows and delete them from the phone. I never go through any third party app or software to move the photos. I hope this helps.
This is not a solution for a large number of files, but an easy way to transfer is to email images to yourself.

I have Photos on my I Phone and Photos on my Mac Book Pro and Mac Book Air has the older photo program. My photos automatically transfer from I Phone Photos to Mac Book Pro Photos every time both are connected to the internet. No cords or connections necessary. I am technologically challenged, so if it works why go to all that trouble with other apps. The charging cord for the phone can be used to load photos too. Sorry I know nothing about PCs and my family thinks my Macs are complicated. I couldn't operate a PC. Lol
iTunes is a free app which facilitates the movement of music and photos (and a few other things, I think) between a Windows computer and an iPhone. The only cost is when one wants to download music or photos from the web to the phone. My son tells me there are numerous YouTube video tutorials about the subject.
