Buy it immediately.
I bought 2 on ebay at different times. they have about 26K snaps. They are incredible. All my old Nikon mount lenses work and they meter with old and non cpu lenses, a rare quality.
I love them and the camera you describe is a steal at that price and 12K clicks. I'm still working on all the tweaks. I set them up as I want and basically they are highly sophistocated point and shoots to me.

Authorizeduser; We have two D700s, one was a 9+ used from Adorama with less than 18K activations for about $400, this past year; at different times prices fluctuate, like the stock market; we've never bought a pre-owned/used or NikonUSA refurbished body/lens from Adorama that was other than perfect. Hard to beat their 30-day return policy whatever you do/don't like, and the extended 90-day warranty on used bodies is also impossible to beat. We did the same with our D7000 and D7200, both refurbished from Adorama, one with 2K activations, with the other at only 1500.

The other D700 was from a private owner through a major vendor, with vendor 30-day guaranty; otherwise we'd have passed despite the $450 price. The body was listed as used/new condition, the same as Adorama's 10 rating, with all original materials. When the body arrived, it looked new, but the AF would not work. After two days of tests against the other D700 and all lenses, Nikon said send it into them. After testing they estimated about $300 to repair not counting our shipping to them of course. Since it's hard to find a D700 in 'new' condition for less than a grand we authorized the repair. After it returned from Nikon, the list of what they had to replace was astounding. Evidently the body had been dropped on the owner's lens and when the owner couldn't get it to focus, he dumped it. It happens. If not for the vendor's 30-day money-back guaranty and Nikon's fast repair and turn-around (within a week of when UPS overnight delivered it to them) we would have had a very unpleasant experience. The vendor looked the evidence over, and refunded our payment. The camera was ours for basically the cost of Nikon repair. It was a hassle but worked out in the end. Nikon provides a 6-month rebuild warranty so we're still waiting and watching, but there's no sign of any other issue.

Not every seller tells whoppers, but it's always better to purchase from a reputable dealer or honest broker that will back your case up when others turn out to be less than honest, or have ill-intentions. It's literally impossible to go after interstate sellers, even if your state calls such theft a felony. Good luck, sv.

Guess I got lucky on this one. The Nikon D700 I bought about 5 weeks ago works perfectly. I love it. The only issue i have noticed is, it seems a full frame camera has a difference depth of field than the Nikon D300 I was use to.

All in all, I am happy with my purchase.
