[quote=DaveyDitzer]I keep at least one camera (preset for most parameters) on a nearby shelf set to allow me to grab it and go quickly in case of an unexpected photo opportunity. Have mixed feelings about a zoom vs. just a 50mm (FF) or 35mm (Crop). What do you favor?/quote]
I just keep my Sony RX10 IV with its excellent 24-600mm zoom handy for those unexpected photo opportunities...

Two Nikon 7200's. One with the 16-80 f2.8-4 and one with the 70-200 f2.8. If I know I'll be in low light I'll take the 24-70 f2.8. On trips I'll take the 1.4 tele for anything I need over 200mm unless I want to have the 80-400 and not mind the extra weight.

OP: One thing I have learned is the preponderance of zoom lens selections vs. the speed or lighter weight of a prime.

I too, have always at least 2 bodies ready to go and the lenses on them are the 70-200/2.8 II and the 16-35/2.8 II. With those two lenses, I'm pretty much ready for anything that comes my way, those are my "walk around lenses"!

A Prime makes me more selective of the subject because of my limitation, it makes me think. A super zoom to me is just a giant point and shoot camera. Sure you can get some great shots with it, but in my opinion at least you are not as focused as when you are limited to a prime lens. Yes, you will miss many opportunities but not as many as you would think because you will be focused on what you can do

On my Xe2 a Nikkor S Auto 50/1.4 on my Xt1 18-135 Fuji and finally on my D300 Sigma 18-250mm. So depending on what I'm doing I have a choice. The most commonly used is the Xt1 18/135 combo.

Nikkor 18-200 is my favorite travel lens, but mostly I'm using my Nikkor 200-500 as my "grab-n-go" right now.

I keep a Nikkor 18-140 on my D3400. Seems to cover most anything that comes up suddenly such as a nice sunset or nice looking clouds.
