I believe that people who don't care for fruitcake just never had really good, homemade fruitcake. The best I've ever had was made by a little old grandma in Appalachia, soaked in some liquor (brandy I think), and aged for months. She passed on her recipe to her granddaughter who is a friend of my wife's. She has promised to give a copy to me but I haven't received it yet. I have a friend in Iowa who also makes them the old fashioned way but using rum. It got too expensive for him and he hasn't made any for several years now.

No offense but honestly that claim can be made for any type of food imaginable. I love raw oysters and clams. Apparently, I find this hard to believe, but some people don't share my love for them. I love about anything chocolate (but not chocolate dipped oysters for some reason). My 10 year old granddaughter does not like chocolate. I love her anyway of course but just can't understand anyone not liking chocolate.

By now I am sure my point is made. I am 72 now. In my life I have eaten many fruitcakes, worked with a few too. Some of the commercial fruitcakes were absolutely wonderful, moist and delicious. I only wish I could remember what company made them. Other commercial fruitcakes were as dry as a bone with absolutely no taste at all. Like most other products some are great and some not so much.

My responds would be "C". I make my own. Besides I don't like Pizza. No Rum/Brandy on mine.

B for me. But I don't think I would care for anchovies in fruitcake nor candied fruit on pizza.

The fruitcake I make was my grandmother’s wedding cake some 100+ years ago. The pans I use were hers, also. Three pans, graduated sizes with removable bottoms.
The recipe seriously makes about 25 pounds of fruitcake, soaked in brandy, rich dark and delicious! Also lasts forever as long as it is unwrapped and brandies periodically. I will happily share the recipe with anyone who might like it.

Yeah, I know you're right on this. For me, it's liver. I threw up the last time it tried it (60+ yrs ago), can't stand even the smell of it today, but lots of people love it. Don't know if it's chemical or biological, or both.

I don't understand why folks don't like fruit cake, I mean it is made of candied/dried fruits, who doesn't like dates and raisins or candied pineapple. The cake is a heavy sweat pound cake and then it is soaked in alcohol. There is not a better desert in the world.

I agree but not every fruit cake is that good. The one I ordered from Beatrice bakery called Grandma's is very good.

This is how I feel about fruit cake. Makes a good bomb.
Note: In WWII in the pacific Theater my father was a Marine. When fruit cakes arrived in tins the tin was opened and the cake was squeezed to remove the alchohol and the cake thrown away and the alcohol was consumed.

There is a big one in the White House.

I felt the same way about fruit cakes, until I tried Claxton's.

Captain Al

It's not my Mom's but it is really good. I get one every year and soak a little rum in it.

I wonder if it has to do with anchovies? I mean there are people who like anchovies on their pizzas and people who can't stand them. Doesn't seem to be any in between for people.

Now I love fruit cake and anchovies on pizza and my wife dislikes both. Let's have a poll. Any Hogerts who like one but not the other? Any like us who can't stand both.

There would be 4 possibilities: A-Can't stand either, B-Like both, C- like fruit cake but not 'anchovies on pizza', D- Don't like fruit cake but do like 'anchovies on pizza'.

Let's keep it simple and not include things like Don't like anchovies on pizza but do like them in chef's salad. I suspect the combo of pizza and anchovies distresses some people because of the overwhelming amount of saltiness not found in other combination.

Poll closes at 2400 12/25/18.

Happy holidays.

MY favourite cake is dark damp fruitcake. as a diabetic it is forbidden to me now......groan,

I understand, also diabetic. However, before there used to be a brand called Mission Pak fruit cake that I loved. The cake part was only to hold together the candied fruit and pecans. It had to be ordered through the mail. The fruit was juicy, not hard like some candied fruit. The closest I've seen in years is Entenmanns.

Just looked up on the internet. Apparently the original company is no longer in existence. However another bakery lists a similar product for $34 for a 1 pound cake.
