The 2018 version of Ashampoo Office costs about £20 it can open MS Office files, also, it can edit and write them, they can then be read again by anyone using the MS Product, no many can do that. It has the equivalent to Word Excell and Powerpoint.

While I run Windows, I have used OpenOffice and LibreOffice for several years now and they are both good replacements for M$ office software IMO.

I have been using NeoOffice for years and recently LibreOffice which works very well, it should open all documents for you.

I don't use Libre Office personal but I work as a volunteer tax preparer and all of the AARP provided machines use it for whatever office functions people need. I created a Word document in the latest version of MS Word last year and was able to make it available for shareable updating with no problems. Other could make changes and I could still open and modify the document.

I don't think you'll have any trouble.

I have used Open Office and Microsoft office. Microsoft office is definitely a more polished and sophisticated product. If you like to insert pictures, use mathematical symbols or use foreign languages, The Microsoft product is far better. The spreadsheet program in open office is quite good for simple spreadsheets particularly when they are used to import data into other computer programs. In this regard the mac version of Excel does somethings in a highly non-standard way and causes problems. Even though PowerPoint is a rather poor program it is far better than that found in open office. If you only write letters to Aunt Tilda then open office is OK but then again so is WordPad. If the monthly fee bothers you then consider WordPerfect. I haven't used this product but oher programs by Corel are competent. BTW Office 2007 etc run just fine under windows 10. This is just one of the reasons that I want nothing to do with Mac's

Considering that it's free I think the OP would be doing the right thing trying Open Office and maybe Libra Office before making a decision, we often suggest people try PP programs before buying into one, why not with a Word Processing program. AS an aside when I was still working I had the opportunity to be trained on both Word Perfect and the then Word, Word Perfect was head and shoulders above Word at that time. As I don't use it anymore I've probably forgotten most of what I learned.

Google Drive has DOCS, SHEETS, and SLIDES plus more. I also use MS Office 2010 and have no problems with DOCS reading Word files.

I've never used Libre Office, but after many years of MS Office I cut the cord and now use Googles Docs and Sheets; they do all I need and more. Totally free. I highly recommend them.

I have had Libre Office or it by its previous name (which doesn't come to me at the moment) on my home computer since Windows XP days. There were some glitches in the early days, but it has satisfied all of my needs for years.

After upgrading my computer to a 2017 iMac (27in), I discovered my 2011 version of Microsoft Office will not run. I am looking to upgrade, and discovered that Microsoft Office has become very complicated. The latest versions appear to be 2016 and 2019 (soon to be released) and Office 365 which is subscription based. Both the 2016 and 2019 versions will not be supported after 2025. This is getting complicated.

I am a casual office user, and don't need the most expensive version. I have read about LibreOffice, which is free and seems to get good reviews.
I would like to hear from anyone who has tried LibreOffice. It is important that I can open my old Microsoft documents, so I would like to know if microsoft documents can be opened in LibreOffice.
Thanks Steve

Yes, LibreOffice opens MS Office documents, AND you can save what you create with LibreOffice in Microsoft formats. If you are a "casual" office suite user you will not have file-compatibility issues. There could be highly-formatted word processor files that don't transfer over 100% intact, but "casual" likely means you won't see that.

Office 365 right now IS Office 2016 in subscription form. Microsoft Office 2019 does not exist yet.

What do you mean 2016 and 2019 will not be supported after 2025? If you have an Office 365 subscription, it gets you the current version of Office (2016 presently). When MS releases 2019, your 365 subscription will move to it. You always have the latest Office with a 365 subscription. Yes you can buy 2016 or 2019 (when released) outright, but then you're subject to eventual loss of support and have to buy a newer version.

I have been running Libre Office for as long as it has been out. I use it on Linux primarily at home but if I create documents for work they get opened in MS Office. I have had very few issues, occasionally ther may be formatti g issues but it is very rare.

Have been running Office 2010 since it came out. I retired and just see no need for newer editions.

I used MS Office while still employed. I retired 16 years ago and several years ago my very old copy of MS Office became unusable, so I changed to MS Works, and then MS Works disappeared. I need very little capability at this point in my life, but began looking for something that would work at no cost and found LibreOffice. It's way more than I need but has had no problems loading anything I have that originated in MS Office/Works. I'm happy with it.

All my systems have been MS-OS operated, not Mac.
