I was working on assignment 600 miles from home. My wife texted me that she had run out of gas and needed help. I told her to call AARP road service. They brought gas to her and then car still would not start. After a couple of hours, the road service guy finally gave up. She called me back not knowing what to do. I told her to lock her car and I would call a towing company to have it taken to the nearest dealership and she needed to Uber home. I called the towing company and arranged to have her car towed and the dealership to make an appointment for service when the car arrived. This whole process took almost 4 hours and I had to delay 2 meetings with staff. Then she texted me and said she could not get the key out of the ignition. I asked her if it was in park because the key would not come out if it was not. Also the car would not start if the car was not in park.
The rest of the story.. I called the towing company and the dealership to cancel and my wife drove her car home.
'nuff said...she was very nice to me when I talked to her later in the evening.

I did that with my big truck once... Wouldnt start unless in park or neutral....

Great Story,,,My Brother in law just bought a new car,,,,no jack in trunk and no spare tire,, just an aerosol can to blow up the tire and slime or goop in can to seal hole in tire long enough to get to a gas station or place to fix tire,,I have AAA but have never used it,,,and probably a lot of the younger generation would have no clue on how to change a tire,,,so your Wife is probably just one of many people who are losing the ability to analyze a situation figure it out and then have the capability to execute a fix,,,I have heard of people in runaway cars with a stuck accelerator who never thought to turn off the ignition or put the car transmission in neutral...

Yup, my wife called me because her fob wouldn’t unlock her car. I gently said, “use the key”! Then if you have time, go to Batteries Plus and have them replace the battery. (Now, a lot of cars don’t have a key).
Here is one on me. I drive vehicles to about 300,000 miles. I was a family get together about 10 years ago and I was suppose to follow my brother, but I couldn’t shift the rental into gear. My brother sensed my problem and came back and said, “put your foot on the brake”! Darn new stuff with all kinds of safety stuff. It had happened to him to.

BTW, do not use the tire goo in the can for flat tires. It will ruin the tire pressure sensor in any car from 2007 on. They can be fairly costly to replace just for a flat tire. Better off keeping a spare or a compressor in your car.

My grandson was telling me about the crazy maths he is doing on his nuclear engineering course at university and said you don't really know what I am talking about do you grandad. I said no some of it yes but mostly no then I asked him how to describe how an epicyclic geartrain worked he didn't know what I was talking about either.

I have a keyless ignition and twice (once should have been enough) I forgot to put the car in park when I attempted to shut it off - loud beeping and car doesn't shut off - took a while to figure it out.
I also got several calls at work (now retired) from my wife when she locked herself out of the car - it also happened at the dog groomers - next car for her will be keyless since car won't lock with the remote inside.

At a time that I was out of town, my wife spent two hours attempting to start her car with the wrong key.
The right key looked the same, and was in her purse the entire time.
