No need for a war over this. It's just one more option. Many cameras have the ability to change a photograph into something a lot different. Someone posted a "painting" version of a photo yesterday, and it was done in the camera.

I do quite a bit of this for commercial purposes. I’ve found that artsy photographs sell very well at art shows. Here are a couple of examples.

Not a one click button but just playing around in Photoshop.

I have been playing around with this and it is a lot of fun. I know, there are purists photographers and purists artists who condemn contamination of their art by non "Professionals" but I am not saying to do one or the other; just try them. Some photos that you are thinking of putting in the trash may be quite nice as a sketch or painting.

I have been using Akvis programs and they work very well. My only bone to pick with them is that they use an assault rifle picture in their tutorial for their sketch program. I have written to their support and suggested they use something else because to me, assault weapons are not what most photographers and artists hold dear to their heart. They don't seem to be anxious to reply to my wishes or even address them. Too bad, because I think their software is decent. I know, you can do the same type of things with other software but I have found the others to be lacking.

I recently tried a goodly number of software to turn photos into sketches. Some were OK but I had difficulty using them. Some didn't give me the look I wanted. I finally ended up using steps outlined in a tutorial by Photoessentials.com. The steps are pretty easy, but getting the final look I wanted took tedius work "erasing" details I didn't want. I finally added a step taking the "finished" sketch and placing it onto a blank white layer. Then I could erase the elements I didn't want, leaving a white background for the sketch. It is very time-consuming and detailed work, but once finished I was pleased with the results. If you wish to see my final results, you may go here to look at them: https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/kathy-mcclure.html?tab=artworkgalleries&artworkgalleryid=813211.

Changing photos into paintings is like changing hand sketches into a final product. It's the "artist" in the person that counts. I have been using Topaz Impressions to great success, at least, to my satisfaction and that of others around me. Do it if you like the results and don't worry about what others might think.

Your photo, do what you want with it. Just ignore those alleged purists - at worst their hemorrhoids will get massaged.

"Playful" post processing can be as complex as you like by choosing software that gives you a great deal of control. The results can be subtle or in-your-face. As for any "war" over the subject, the second link in my signature is where I stand

1. Topaz Simplify, Nik Color Efex, PS Elements
2. Topaz Simplify

Sometimes I use the freeware program, Photo To Sketch. Compared to commercial programs it is relatively slow, but worth the extra wait.

How about if they used an "assault knife" instead, eh ?

Yes, I am learning there are quite a few ways to do this. I was concerned when I originally posted because I know a professional photographer who absolutely hates this sort of thing and in the comments under a Corel Paint Utube, where were some really nasty comments about people who use paint or sketch programs on photos. Glad to see that on this forum, most seem to accept this as a way to create something, if only for self, that gives satisfaction.

I have found sketching software useful in documentation of family group photos. I have several group shots that are fairly old and most of the people have died. So not many of the living family members remember them. I take one of the photos and turn it into a sketch. I then erase the faces and insert numbers so that all the heads are numbered. I then make a list correlating the heads with names. I then combine the original, the annotated sketch, and the list into one image. That gives me something that includes the group shot that someone could crop out and use, but also includes identification of all the individuals in the shot (assuming I can ID them).
